Consider the air conditioning of a house through use of solar energy. At a particular location experiment has shown that solar radiation allows a large tank of pressurized water to be maintained at 175℃(448.15K). During a particular time interval, heat in the amount of 1500KJ must be extracted from the house to maintain its temperature at 24℃(299.15K) when the surroundings temperature is 33℃(306.15K). Treating the tank of water, the house, and the surroundings as heat reservoirs, determine the minimum amount of heat that must be extracted from the tank of water by any device built to accomplish the required cooling of the house. No other sources of energy are available.

Consider the air conditioning of a house through use of solar energy. At a particular location experiment has shown that solar radiation allows a large tank of pressurized water to be maintained at 175℃(448.15K). 175℃(448.15K)を維持する。 During a particular time interval, heat in the amount of 1500KJ must be extracted from the house to maintain its temperature at 24℃(299.15K) when the surroundings temperature is 33℃(306.15K).

Some students are conducting a science experiment whreby they are measuring the depth of water in a tank, one metre high, over a 5hours period. After recording their results, they have predicted that the depth of water can be found by using the formula D=・・・・・・ where D is the depth in centimetres and t is the time inb hours. (a)what is the minimum amount of water in the tank over the five hour period?? (b) If the tank, at the start, had twice as much water in it, how would this be shown on the graph ? (c)If the formula was used to model the depth of water in the tank for up to 7 hours what would you expect to happen?

We would carefully hold our prizes upright in the bag all the way home in the car. Then they would swim in their plastic bubble-like world floating in the top of the tank until the water temperature reached that of its surroundings, probably a half hour or so, but seemingly forever to a small child. At last it was time to release the fish from the plastic bags. Our fish were home.

A 47.5g sample of a metal at a temperature of 425℃ is placed in 1.00L(1000g) of water which had an initial temperature of 18℃. What is the specific heat capacity of the metal if the final tempeature of the metal and water at equilibrium is 21℃?( the specific heat capacity of water is 4.18J/ ℃.g) 425℃で47.5gの金属片が、1L(1000g)、18℃の水の中に入っている。

Water leaks from the bottom of a tank at a rate proportional to the depth h of the water in the tank. Write down an equation describing this if V is the volume of the water in the tank after time t and if the tank is a cylinder show that dh/dt is proportional to h.

Systems theory is a fascinating new discipline. By looking at each part of a system and determining the effect it has on other parts, a map of the process can be made. This analysis helps make it clear how changes in one part of the system affect other parts and the system as a whole. A common example now is the melting of ice in the Arctic. If the summer temperature stays under a particular point, the amount of melted ice stays small. However, if the average temperature of the air in the summer is too high, the system might enter a state where all the ice melts. This happens because of a feedback loop: since ice reflects a lot of sunlight away from the Arctic, if there is less ice than usual, then more water will absorb sunlight and warm up. With more warm water present, more ice melts, and more water gets warmed up; this cycle continues, and accelerates. Soon, there is no more ice left. As for the mercury cycle, the ocean methylation process is not completely understood, so we are not yet able to figure out how to prevent mercury from methylating and entering the food chain. Once the process is understood, we hope to be able to control the amount of methylation so as to protect our marine food supply.

We have used oxygen-18 in ice core data as a climate proxy instead of the dendro-climatology data since the oxygen data better preserves the detail in annual variations. The rapid cooling as indicated as the sharp drop in delta oxygen-18 by ~ 2‰ can be seen just around the “11-year” solar minima at solar polarity negative during the Maunder Minimum, indicating an apparent “22-year” cycle in temperature variations. On the other hand, large decline in delta oxygen-18 occurs when the polarity is positive before and after the Maunder Minimum. The transitions into/out from the “Normal Mode (colder event at polarity positive)” to/from the “Maunder Minimum mode (colder event at polarity negative)” are resulting in the appearance of significant “11-year” cycle in temperature variations. The correlation coefficient of carbon-14 (considering 2-year lag in the carbon cycle) and dendro-data with the “22-year” solar cycle band during EMMP (bandwidth: 16–20 years) is - 0.71, which implies drops in temperature correspond to the period when higher GCRs flux is observed. The features of solar forcing on climate found in this study can be schematically described as shown in Fig. 6 where Δt represents the changing length of the “11-year” cycle, which tends to be longer at the Maunder Minimum mode. The wavelet spectra of temperatures support this proposition showing a significant signal of 11-year period only around the transition time getting into/out of the Maunder Minimum ( Fig. 3).

    1. Introduction The role and exact extent of natural and anthropogenic forcing for the climate evolution has been under much debate and one of the major sources of external forcing can be through solar variability. As is well summarized by Hoyt and Schatten (1997), several meteorological phenomena, such as temperature variations, cloud coverage, frequency of lightning strikes, and droughts, seem to be responding to solar variables over a wide range of time scales such as the 27-day solar rotation period, 11-year activity cycle, 22-year polarity reversal cycle and the other longer quasi-cyclic periods. Although the most straightforward mechanism of the sun–climate connection is the direct heating of the earth by solar radiation, it is unlikely that the entire solar influence on climate can be attributed simply to the variation of TSI (Foukal et al., 2004 and Foukal et al., 2006).
