私の訳のおかしいところを教えてください。
A blackout that reached from Cincinnati to Columbus left large numbers in the dark last night as the storms continued to move northerly. すみません。前の節の続きも訳し方が分からないです。 普通の文法問題単品だったらある程度分かるのですが、長文問題になるとさっぱり太刀打ちできなくて・・・ that reached from Cincinnati to ColumbusがA blackoutにかかる関係詞ですよね？ そして、「シンシナティからコロンバスに渡る停電は」が主語として訳し、left large numbers in the dark last nightの構造がつかめないのですが、感覚的に訳すと、 「昨夜暗闇を多くの人数に残しました」 つまり、シンシナティからコロンバスに渡る停電は昨夜、多くの人に暗闇の被害を残しました。 そして、as the storms continued to move northerlyがその理由を示し、「嵐が北上したため」と主節にかかる。 よって、 嵐が北上したため、シンシナティからコロンバスに渡って多くの人に暗闇の被害を残しました。 と訳したのですが、どうもしっくり来ません。 連続した質問で申し訳ありませんがアドバイス下さい。

large numbersはここだけでは判断できないですね。 多分、contextが関わってくるので、piccocoはさん多分、この 前後の文章もお持ちだと思いますので、とりあえず、「多くの人」 という訳で統一しておきますね。 まず、訳に関してですが、日本語っぽくはないですが、 大体それで解釈としては合っていると思います。 「台風がゆっくりと北上したことでシンシナシティからコロンブスの 街は停電の被害にさらされ、多くの市民が真っ暗闇に取り残された」 とするとちょっと日本語っぽいかなと思います。（多少意訳です けどね。） 文構造自体は関係詞の部分はお察しの通りです。 問題はleft large numbers in the darkですか？ leaveにはleave O Cという形が存在していますよね？ 「in」と前置詞がついていますが、その形の派生形です。 なので、large numbersをin the darkの状態にしておく という意味です。まぁlarge numbersが先にも書いたように 前後関係から、たくさんの車かも知れませんし、家かも しれません。それはpiccocoさんの方で判断してください。

こんにちは。シンシナティ在住です。昨年の９月に台風の余波でこの辺では丸２日停電になってしまいました。 コロンバスはシンシナティから北東に１７０キロほど行ったところに位置します。この文では、嵐が北上したことで、停電がシンシナティだけでなくコロンバスにも及び、多くの人（世帯）が夜も明かりなしで過ごした、ということです。 余談ですが、この辺でも通りを挟んで停電しなかったというところもあったり、この辺は電気コンロの家も多く、停電が続く家では料理ができないので、我が家も近所の人と冷蔵庫の中の食料を持ち出して、炭で焼くバーベキューグリルで外で焼いて食べていました。

こんにちは。 構造的な考え方は、ご指摘で100%合っていると思いますよ。こういうことでしょうね： A blackout // that reached from Cincinnati to Columbus // left large numbers in the dark last night // as the storms continued to move northerly. 「嵐が北上を続けるにつれ、昨晩シンシナティからコロンブスの広域で停電が発生、多くの家屋が闇に包まれたままとなった」 、、、large numbers が家屋なのか市民なのかは分かりませんが、文はこれでスッキリしませんでしょうか。A storm ⇒ 無生物主語であるところが一つのポイントなのでしょう、確かに「多くの人に暗闇の被害を残した」という訳になりますが、「停電 ⇒ 暗闇になる ⇒ 被害を被っている」のは当たり前ですよね。なので単刀直入に「闇に包まれた」と解釈して良いところだと思います。オハイオ州の地図を見ると、Cincinnati ⇔ Columbus は本当に広域ですね。 「嵐が北上したため、シンシナティからコロンバスに渡って多くの人に暗闇の被害を残しました。と訳したのですが、どうもしっくり来ません。 、、、A blackout 停電は訳文に入れた方が良いでしょうね。これがこの分のメインエントリーだと思いますよ。 日本語も英語も、読んだ人が書いた人の意図を一発でクリアに分かってナンボですよね。なので文法にばかり捉われてしまい、細かい言い回しを何とか訳そうとして訳文が複雑になってしまったのでは本末転倒です。例え訳の中に意訳が入ったとしても、書き手の意図が誤釈なく一発で通じるようになるのであれば、進んで取り入れるべきだと僕は考えます。そもそも日・英語は全くルーツの違う言語なのですから、意訳ができてナンボだと思いますが、いかがでしょう？ leave に関しては、慣用句でこんなことが言われますよ： ・My car will leave yours in the dust. （君の車をホコリの中に取り残す ⇒ 僕の車の方が速いぜ） 、、、これが転じた？のか、こういう意味でも使われるようです： ・You have left me in the dust in front of everyone. （恥を掻かせた） 、、、left large numbers in the dark もこれらと全く同じ構造ですね。 ご参考までに。

The Battle of Kondoa Irangi was a battle of the East African Campaign of World War I.Following successes at the battles of Latema Nek and Kahe, Entente forces under the overall command of General Jan Smuts continued their advance southwards into German East Africa. By April 17, 1916, General Van Deventer's 2nd Division had reached the vicinity of the town of Kondoa Irangi - where they made contact with a unit of German Schutztruppe. The 2nd Division succeeded in pushing the enemy back, and captured the town on April 19. Entente casualties were minimal, whilst 20 Askari and 4 Germans were killed and 30 Askaris captured. Also found were 80 modern rifles with ammunition and a large herd of cattle. Despite low casualties, Van Deventer told the high command that the 2nd Division was exhausted and would be unable to continue the advance for some time.

The Lone Pine battlefield was named for a solitary Turkish pine that stood there at the start of the fighting; The tree was also known by the Anzac soldiers as the "Lonesome Pine", and both names are likely to have been inspired by the popular song "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine". The battlefield was situated near the centre of the eastern line of the Australian and New Zealand trenches around Anzac Cove on a rise known as "400 Plateau" that joined "Bolton's Ridge" to the south with the ridge along the east side of "Monash Valley" to the north. Being towards the southern end of the area around Anzac Cove, the terrain in the Lone Pine region was comparatively gentle and the opposing trenches were separated some distance with a flat no-man's land intervening. Due to its location relative to the beachhead and the shape of the intervening ground, Lone Pine's importance lay in the fact that its position provided a commanding view of the Australian and New Zealand rear areas. From the 400 Plateau it was possible to observe as far south as Gaba Tepe and its possession would have afforded the Ottomans the ability to place the approaches to the Second Ridge under fire, preventing the flow of reinforcements and supplies from the beachhead to the forward trenches. The main part of the Australian position at Lone Pine was centred on a feature known as "The Pimple", where a salient had developed at the point where the Australians' position was closest to the Ottoman line. To the east of the salient, opposite The Pimple, the Ottoman line extended from the head of a gully—known as "Owen's Gulley" by the Australians—south for 400 yards (370 m) towards the neck of Bolton's Ridge and continued south along a spur called "Sniper's Ridge". Because of the salient around The Pimple, the Ottomans had focused on developing the trenches along the flanks of the position more than the centre, and had placed the firing positions in the centre in depth in order to gain the advantage of being able to pour enfilade fire upon any attacking force. At the rear of the Ottoman line, near Owen's Gully, was a depression called "The Cup" that was not visible from the Australians' position on The Pimple. Despite overflights of the area by British reconnaissance aircraft in June, the Australians were unaware of The Cup's existence, and at the time of the attack they believed this area to be flat and to consist of further trench lines. In reality it was actually a reserve area where the Ottomans had established a regimental headquarters and sited a series of bivouacs in terraces and at the time of the attack there were large numbers of reinforcements camped there.

PASSENGER PIGEONというタイトルの英文なのですが英語が得意なかた翻訳お願いします！ Early explorers in the United States found pigeons in unbelievably large numbers.One of the things the settlers noticed about them was that they went from one place to another at particular season.At that time passenger was used for a bird of this kind. So the early pioneers called this bird a passenger pigeon, though migratory pigeon, pigeon of passage, blue headed pigeon,and wild pigeon were also used.The story of these beautiful birds is a sad one. At one time the largest flocks were numbered in the billions.Their nesting places were sometimes several miles in breadth and forty or fiffy miles long. Some trees in these areas would have a hundred nests in them, and others were broken down entirely by the weight of the birds. Pioneers sometimes saw flocks passing overhead which they estimated to be at least a mile wide and 240 miles long. For many years after white men came, the number of these birds did not appear to diminish, but as the country became more and more populous, and as thousands of people continued to destroy the birds without regard to their survival, they began to disappear. The last one in the whole world died at the Cincinnati Zoological Park in 1914. We unconsciously refer to this remarkable bird when we use the expression Stool pigeon.

leave O Cは頭に浮かびませんでした。 言われて見ればその通りです。 前置詞とかが入ってくると一気に混乱してしまうのが悪い癖です・・・ 意味的にもすっきりしました。
