こんにちは！ ＞With the stakes so high we simply cannot afford the same old gridlock and partisan posturing in Washington. 「国民の期待が非常に高く、我々はワシントンのこれまで通りの停滞や党派的な態度をとる余裕がない。」 ●With はご存じと思いますが付帯状況のwith で、the stakes are high という状況では、の意味になります。 英和辞典もあまりパッとしませんが、stakes は、something that is staked for gain or loss (Webster's Collegiate Dic.) で、イメージとしては掛け金がうずたかく積まれている状態です。それは比喩的には、もし政治がここで失敗すれば大損になる（＝おそろしく悲惨なことになる）状況ということをいいたいわけです。This is a critical moment. ということを言いたいのですね。 そんなときに、（日本みたいに）議事をゆきづまらせたり、党利党略に走っている余裕はない、と言っています。 ＞But they will have little patience if we allow politics to get in the way of action, and our economy continues to slide. 「しかし、もし我々が政治が行動の邪魔になることを許し、経済が悪化し続ければ、国民は我慢できないだろう。」 they will have little patience は、国民がほとんど辛抱強さを持たない→我慢ができない。という理解でよいでしょうか？ ●正確な解釈だと思います。the people will become impatient ＝ the people will get angry ということで、政府に対し、何やってんだよ～！と批判的になること、怒ることを婉曲に言おうとしています。 以上、ご参考になれば幸いです！
