directedの用法とこの文での意味
He has written a depressing record of destruction, DIRECTED not only against the earth he inhabit but against the life that shares it with him. SILENT SPRING の中の一文です。 DIRECTED は destruction にかかっていますか？ また、direct の数ある意味のなかでここではどういう意味で使われて いるのでしょうか？

ここのdirectedの意味は「～にむけられて」という感じになります。 directにはもともと何かの方向を指し示す言葉だというのはご存知と思います。 まず前半。(直訳します) 彼は破壊についての失望的な記録を書いた。となります。 その後にdirectedがありますね。 「記録」が、～に向けられているのか。 それとも 「破壊」が、～に向けられているのか。 記録ならば、世間の人々とか、読み手に、というふうな相手がdirected againstの後に続くでしょう。 ですがここではnot only Ａ but Ｂがはさまって、この熟語の意味は「ＡだけでなくＢも」という意味です。 ではAは何でしょうか「against the earth he inhabit」とありますね。 「彼の住んでいるこの地球」という意味ですね。 そしてBは、「against the life that shares it with him」ですね 「彼とそれ(地球のことでしょう。)をともにする、その生活」となります。 これは読み手ではありませんね。 破壊が向けられている先が、地球や、生活なんだ。ということです。 全訳してみましょう。 彼は、破壊についての失望的な記録を打ち出した。その破壊とは、彼の住んでいる地球に向けられたものだけでなく、それを彼とともにする生活にも向けられたものである。 これはカンマに忠実に訳しています。一度カンマを振ることで、向けられた先を強調しているんですね。ですから和訳するときには、訳し上げをせずに、前から順に話していきます。もしくはただ破壊、に対して修飾する語が、こうも長いのでカンマがあるだけ。それならば↓の訳。 もしdirected～himまでをしっかりdestructionにかけるのならば、こうなります。 彼は、彼の住んでいる地球や、それをともにする生活に向けられた破壊に関する失望的な記録をうちだした。 とこうすっきりした感じになりますね。 文法としては、ただの分詞だと思います。 a boy running in the parkとか a used carのように、現在分詞、過去分詞を使って名詞を修飾する用法ですね。 ここではdestructionに対してdirected～himまでが修飾にあたります。 どうでしょうか。

こんにちは。 お世話になっています。 海外サイトで調べものをしていたら 次のような文章がありました。 You have a gripe with him but only because he didn't it. この「but」なのですが、これが文法的に どういう意味なのかがよく分かりません。 「except」みたいな除外なのかな、と。 和訳ソフトや和訳サイトも混乱しているみたいです（^-^）。 知りたいのは「彼がそれをしなかったこと」を 理由にしてもいいのか、いけないのかです。 全訳していただけるとありがたいですが、 これだけでもうれしいです。 よろしくお願いします。

少し長くなりますが，前文がないと意味の取りようがないと思いますので，タイプします．次に挙げる文の前に，主人公は図書館に入って，余り興味を感じないギリシャ史の本を読もうとしていたが，そのうちうとうととしだしたと言う意味合いの記述が数行に渡ってあります． When I opened my eyes there was an old man sitting there opposite me. I hadn't heard him come in and I must have looked surprised at seeing him there, because he smiled and asked if it was all right for him to sit there. He was silent for a few minutes and then he began to talk. His long thin finger pointed to the book in front of me and he said that it was interesting. Of course I didn't argue with him, even though, I didn't really agree. But it soon became clear to me that he knew a lot about Greek history, for he started to tell me things that were in that book as if he'd written it himself. He am writing a letter. に助動詞をつけて、 He must be writing a letter. とすることができます。 それと同じように、 He has written a letter. に助動詞をつけたものが、 He must have written a letter. になるわけでしょうか？ 助動詞＋完了形は、現在完了に助動詞がつけたと理解すればいいのでしょうか？ とすると、助動詞＋完了形も継続の意味とか完了の意味とか経験の意味を持っているのでしょうか？

昨日ネイティブの方と勉強をしていて、このような表現を教えてもらいました。 The book that was been written by him 意味はわかります。本はまだ完成していないんですよね！？途中で何かが起こり、書きかけの本ということになってますよね！？ でも文法的なことが一切わかりません。 どうしてwasが使われるのですか！？受動態の形になっているのと、完了形の形が混ざっているように思うのですが、何だかピンときません。 The book that has been written by him The book that was written by him(これはもう本は完成してますよね！？） 全てピンとこないので、この違いについて教えていただけますか！？ お願いします。
