The humanist ideal of an all-round cultivation of man's physical and intellectual abilities was brought into relation with the Protestant ideal of what Troeltsc(人名)has called secular or spiritual ascetism -of sanctification by the diligent exercise of man's "calling" - of doing his duty in the state of life in which it has pleased God to call him.

What is the seacret, then,of Marx's appeal for and influence and power over millions of the earth's inhabitants? Neill has suggested that Marx is "the symbolical leader of the have-nots in their struggle against the haves."Another interpretation comes from Harold Laski:"At bottom, the main passion by which he was moved was the passion for justice. He may have hated too strongly,he was jealous and he was proud. But the mainspring of his life was the desire to take from the shoulders of the people the burden by which it was oppressed. "Yet another perceptive evaluation comes from Freehof, who wrote, "The great constructive gift of Karl Marx to modern society, socialistic and capitalistic alike,is his picture of the inevitability of a society in which poverty and suffering will cease. This ideal has become a challenge to every social system. Even a social system like ours, which rejects his economics, nevertheless accepts that ideal in its own way. Thus, the man who himself lived in misery gave the world the hope for the complete abolition of poverty. This is the accomplishment of Karl Marx. That is the way in which he has changed the mind of the modern world."

In another sense man is,of course, himself a part of Nature. But he is also in so many ways so unique that it is convenient to speak of man's relation to the rest of this Nature of which he is also a part.

Those who do not conform find it hard to prosper in society. I very much fear that the first type of individualism, however, is now extremely common in japan. The young have taken up this negative form of individualism as a way of rebelling against authorities, school and parents. This is largely because the second type of individualism is not well understood in japan and not tolerated if it is. Administrators, teachers and parents do not know enough how to “bring out” the best in those under them. Europe has been able to produce an endless stream of original minds and intellectual geniuses of all kinds because of the existence and enkouragement of this creative individualism. Intellectual freedom and mental stimulation are the secret of European people's succes―as pioneers of ideas, ideals and attitudes; as inventors and “discoverers”.

Look at this man, standing bravely like a god. This was your husbandーa real man! Compare that man with this one. Your new husband is like a dying plant, poisoning the memory of his perfect brother with his smell. Can't you see? What judgement has taken you from this to this? What has robbed you of your senses? Oh, crime, where is your punishment? If judgement is as weak as this in a sensible woman's heart, what hope is there of goodness in the world?

Most of them are illegal immigrants from Mexico, a fact that helps explain not only California's recent strawberry boom, but also the quiet, constant transformation of the state's rural landscape and communities. Meanwhile, the eastest-growing and most profitable part of California's farm economyーthe cultivation of high-value specialty cropsーhas also become the one most dependent on the availability of cheap labor. Nearly every fruit and vegetable found in the diet of health-conscious, often politically-aware consumers is still picked by hand: every head of lettuce, every bunch of grapes, every avocado, peach, and plum. As the demand (1) these foods has risen, (2) has the (3) of workers (4) to harvest them. Of the migrants in California today, anywhere from 30 to 60 percent, depending on the crops, are illegal immigrants. Their willingness to work long hours for low wages has enabled California to sustain its agricultural production, despite the loss since 1964 of more than nine million acres of farmland. Fruit and vegetables growers now rely on a flourishing black market in laborーand without it even more farms would disappear. Illegal immigrants, often criticized as welfare cheats, are in effect supporting the most important sector of California's economy. (1)~(4)には、number,so,for,necessary が入るようです。

Water is without doubt the most abundant, the most accessible and the most studied of all chemical compounds. Its omnipresence, its crucial importance for man'survival and its ability to transform so readily from the liquid to the solid and gaseous states has ensured its prominence in man's thinking from the earliest times. secular philosophers also perceived the unique nature of water. thus,Thales of Miletus, who is generally regarded as the initiator of the greek classical tradition of philosophy,ca.585 BC,considered water to be the sole fundamental principle in nature.

It is no exaggeration to say that it is in the search for new and better sources of energy, starting with animal, wind and water power and up through the development of the internal combustion engine, hydroelectric dams, and nuclear reactors, that man's ingenuity has manifested itself most prominently and his understanding of the natural world most significantly deepened.

Colonial administrators and settlers brought scientific cultivation to the country's main export crops (cacao, coffee, cotton). The total number of German officials in the colony was only 12 in 1890. The colony’s infrastructure was developed to one of the highest levels in Africa. Colonial officials built roads and bridges to the interior mountain ranges and three rail lines from the capital Lomé; along the coast to Aného in 1905, to Palime (modern Kpalimé) in 1907, and the longest line, the Hinterlandbahn to Atakpamé by 1911. By 1910, over 1,000 of roads were constructed by the colonial office. Organised in 1888 with 25 Hausa infantry, the Polizeitruppe was utilised in enforcing the colonial authority over the hinterland of Togo.

For CH2M Hill, which has 28,000 employees and made $7 billion in revenue last year, the hiring challenge is less a question of culture than of capabilities. Needing to recruit at least 500 people in Britain this year for construction jobs it has already won, the company is constrained by a shortage of engineers, partly because engineering has not been a popular field of study in the country’s universities.
