今回はよろしくお願いします。 否定・比較表現についての質問があります。 まず、旺文社の『表現のための実践ロイヤル英文法』綿貫陽 マーク・ピーターセン：共著、のP，501に「No (other) bird in the world is larger than the ostrich.」という例文が乗っており、その意味の解釈の説明で、「ダチョウより大きくはないが、ちょうど同じ大きさの鳥がいてもよいことになる」と記されていました。ここでは割愛しますが、次ページにある程度詳細な説明がされていて、一応納得もしたつもりです。ですが、そうするとどうしてもわからない部分が出てきてしまうのです。 語学春秋社の『山口英文法講義の実況中継 下』山口俊治：著、という本のP，200にこんな例題が乗っていました。 「(a)No other dog is less ugly than this one. (b) This dog is the (least) ugly of all. (ほぼ同じ意味になるように適当な語を入れよ)」 便宜上答えは最初に書いてしまいましたが、意味は「この犬が一番醜くない」→「この犬が一番きれい」となります。 そこで、旺文社の方に戻り、 (1)「No (other) bird in the world is larger than the ostrich.」と (2)「No other dog is less ugly than this one.」との 2つの英文を比べると、どうしても同じ構文に見えてしまうのです。つまり(2)の文も「この犬よりかわいいものはいないが、同程度のかわいい犬がいてもよいことになる」と意味を取れるではないかと思ってしまうのです。 しかしそれでは、(2)の言い換えで(b)「This dog is the least ugly of all.」とはならないと思うのです。なぜなら「the least ugly of all」即ち「全ての中で一番～ない」と、最上級の比較を使うと、「This dog」だけが対象となり、他にも同程度のきれいな犬がいる可能性がなくなって、(a)と(b)の文が一致しなくなると思うのです。 「less」ではなく「uglier」を使うともっと分かりやすくなるかもしれません。 「No other dog is uglier than this one.」 「No (other) bird in the world is larger than the ostrich.」 文の構造は全く同じだと思います。しかし上の文は 「This dog is the ugliest of all.」と言い換えが可能なのだと思われます。 一体、(1)と(2)では何がどう違うのでしょうか？それぞれどう解釈すればいいのでしょうか？ どうかよろしくお願い致します。

(1)He is no more young than I am.と (2)He is no younger than I am.はイコールにはならないそうですが、 これらの文は、要点を絞れば、 (1)は「どちらも年をとっているが、同い年とは限らない」 (2)は「どちらも年をとっていて、同い年である」←これは以前ここで教えてもらったのですが ということなのでイコールにならない、と理解しました。ですが、 (3)This box is no less smaller than that one.は (4)This box is as small as that one.に書き換えられますよね？ (3)は「どちらの箱も小さいが、同じ大きさとは限らない」 (4)は「どちらの箱も小さくて、同じ大きさである」 という意味になると思います。 (1)＝(2)が成り立たないのに、どうして(3)＝(4)が成り立つんでしょうか？ 教えてください。

こんな文章に出会って困っています。 Some commentators have even gone as far as to say that the real story of the last ten years is less one of an American economic miracle than one of American underperformance. この"less one"の"one"が"story"だとすると、"less story"ということになると思うのですが、そうだとすると「数少ないストーリー」ということになるのでしょうか？ それとも、もしかして、この"one"は"real story"で、"less"は"real" を修飾しているのでしょうか？ どなたか、宜しくお願いします！

前にも同じような質問をしたかと思いますが、また疑問に思ったことがでてきたので質問させてください。 A is no less B than C is Dの表現の例文として Anne is no less intelligent than her sister. =Anne is just as intelligent as her sister. という文があったのですが、as...asと書き換えられるということは no less Bの表現というよりno+比較級の文としてとらえたほうがいいように思いました。 なぜこの文はno less Bの表現として扱ってあるんでしょうか？
