point out という言葉の使いかたと、単語や熟語の使い方を調べる方法を教えて下さい。
教えていただきたいことが二つあります。 一つめは、point out という言葉の使い方です。 二つめは、単語や熟語の使い方を調べる方法 です。 一つめについて point out とは「指摘する」という意味で、point out ～で「～を指摘する」という意味である、ということは分かるので、He pointed out my shortcomings.（訳：彼は私の欠点を指摘した。） という作文はできるし、また My shortcomings were pointed out by him.（訳：私の欠点が彼によって指摘された。）と作文できるのですが、日本語で言うと「私は彼に欠点を指摘された。」というように、I を主語にした、I was pointed out about my shortcomings by him. という文章は正しいのでしょうか？これだと「指摘された」のは「私」の欠点ではなく、「私」である、という意味になる気もしますが...。無論、「私は彼に欠点を指摘された。」と言いたければ、上記と同じく、He pointed ouf my shortcomings. や、my shortcomings were pointed out by him. と言えばいいのだと思いますが、I を主語にして表現できないものかと思いまして、質問します。また、I was pointed out about my shortcomings by him. という文章が成り立つと仮定して、その場合aboutという前置詞が正しいのかも教えていただけるとありがたいです。 二つめについて 辞書で調べると、大抵 point out its meritsなどのような用例は出ていますが、それ以上の説明は書いてありません。point outに限らず、辞書に詳細な用例がないけれども、単語や熟語の様々な使い方を知りたい、というとき、どうなさるのでしょうか。 以上の点について教えて下さい。どうぞよろしくお願いします。

一つ目の質問に答えてみますね。 >これだと「指摘された」のは「私」の欠点ではなく、「私」である、という意味になる気もしますが...。 そうですね。その通りです。 だから、"I was pointed out about my shortcomings by him. "という 文は正しくないと思います。 「私は彼に欠点を指摘された。」と言いたかったら、"I had my shortcomings pointed out by him" と言えばいいと思います。

Two years ago my family had a run of bad luck, which landed us in a homeless shelter. I got an apartment fairly quickly, and it's mine and my daughter's. My mother was supposed to move in rent-free, but she brought her boyfriend, who I didn't want here. He's still here and barely contributes to the expenses. My father died two years ago from complications due to alcoholism. It was a long time coming, and I lived on the other side of the country and did not want to deal with the daily aspects of his care. My mom took care of him as he died but only in the most cursory ways—feeding and housing him. In all other ways she seemed to hate him: freezing him out and ignoring him when he spoke. I firmly believe that my mom should have left him, and it makes me angry at her for staying with him and enabling his alcoholism. I am having a lot of trouble talking to my mom now. I feel angry every time we speak. アメリカの記事で Nine Things Never to Say to Your Boss というのがありまして、 その中に、”But I emailed you about that last week.” (前略) Bosses hate the "out of my outbox, out of my mind" attitude. (後略) という文がありました。 「上司は『送信トレイから出ていったものは、自分の心にないという態度』を嫌う」と なんとなく意味は分かるのですが、うまい日本語訳ができません。 この箇所ですが、上記より自然で日本語らしい訳文はできないでしょうか？ できる方、ぜひ回答をお願いしまいます。 一応、その前後関係のためにその項目全文を貼ります。 5. “But I emailed you about that last week.” Alerting your boss to a problem via email doesn't absolve you of all responsibility for it. 例えば、「私は父親に叱られるのを恐れている」は、I'm afraid of being scolded by my father. という文が考えられると思いますが、I'm concerned about being scolded by my father. や、I'm worried about being scolded by my father.という言い方も可能でしょうか。辞書を見ても、使いわけがよくわかりませんので、もし説明できる方がいたらよろしくお願いします。
