＃２です。 他の方の回答を見て、自分の回答が間違っていることに気がつきました。 “ambiguity remains the best policy available to Washington”のところは、「あいまい（な態度）が、ワシントンが選択可能な最善の政策でありつづける」ですね。 お詫びして訂正します。

この場合のgivenは、～を考えれば、仮定すると、という意味です。 例：given her goals in life = 人生における彼女の目標・目的を考えれば conclude that ... = that以下を結論とする・～のような結論を下す 参考までに

翻訳について論文を（英語で）書かなければなりません。 今おおまかに決まっていることは： ・日本語→英語の翻訳 ・主題：翻訳者はどのような手法を使って日本語特有の曖昧さを表現しているか？ ・日本文学を古代でも現代でも一作品選ぶ（古文は苦手ですが。） ・違う翻訳者が書いた二つの翻訳を比較し、分析する。 という感じなのですが、まだどの本にしようか全然分からない状態です。もし主題にある日本語特有の「曖昧さ」というのがとてもよくでている作品や、 ザッツジャパンな作品があれば教えてください。 英語版が二つ以上ということは有名な作品に絞られてきますが。。。。この主題じゃなくても翻訳を語る上で関係のある作品などでももしあれば教えてください。 あと、この主題事態も「あいまいさ」なんてそれこそ曖昧だと思うので、こう変えてみれば、という提案ももしあれば、お願いします。
