laid stock とは？
ある雑誌に「Most of the black and white superstars of old have laid stock at middleweight.」という文があったのですが、 "laid stock" という熟語はどの辞書にも載っていませんでした。 古写真みたいなニュアンスかなと思うのですが・・ ご存知の方に教えて頂けるとありがたいです。

laid stock という熟語ではなく，現在完了 have laid stock でしょう．stock は名声(reputation)とか人気(popularity) という意味です．laid は lay の過去分詞．have laid で，意味は「～を築いてきた，～を負うてきた」といったところでしょう． 「したがって，ミドル級における名声を担ってきた」というのはいかが？ 翻訳作業では辞書にない訳語を作ることもよくあります． ボクシングの歴史の中で，多くの優れたボクサー（黒人白人にかかわらずという意味合いですね）がミドル級で活躍し，名声を広めたということでしょう． laid stock という名詞であれば，ストックされるのは写真に限りません．強調しますが，ここでは「写真」ではありません． また，lay something on という表現もありますが，これ自体インフォーマル(Oxford)とされていますから，on/at の区別は気にしないでよいでしょう．

laidはlayのpp形です。layには (重点・信頼等)を置くという意味があります。stockには「信頼・信用等」の意味があります。lay stock = 信頼・信用を置く = 重視する・重要視する・関心をもつの意味だと思います。 ただ、この用法ですと lay stock on の形が一般的だと思います。atを用いるのは方言かもしくは誤用のような気がします。ボクサーに関する記事なので「ミドルウエイト級」を／に重視していた・関心をもっていたくらいの意味でしょうか。 同じ意味の熟語に"take stock in"がありますが、こちらは否定形に用いられるのが普通です。
