会話問題に関しての質問です
会話問題の途中から抜き出しましたので、文意がわかりにくいかと思いますが、その点はご了承下さい。Do you mind if I just give her change？というAさんの質問に対しての応答で、Bさんは了承をするのですが、その際の返答の選択肢でNo, no, go right ahead.というのが正解なのは納得がいったのですが、No, I’m afraid not.というのが×になるのでしょうか？私はNoが付いているから良いかなと思ったのですが、それで、辞書で調べてみると、I’m afraid notやI’m afraid so.なんてものまでありました、これら３つの違いってなんなのでしょうか？

>では、No, I’m afraid notとI’m afraid notの違いはなんなのでしょうか？ あまり違いはないと言うのが、答えでしょう。 日本語でも、英語でも、YES、NOで答える疑問文に違う形で答えることは非常に多くあります。 「今９時ですか。」「９時５分です。」のように、本来求めている情報が伝わればいいので、YES,NOが省略されるのでしょう。

Do you mindの文章は 私が～したら気にする？（してもいい？）という意味です。 その場合、No, I'm afraid not.というと、残念ながら気にしないよ。となってしまいます。 私の感覚から言うと、I'm afraid notやsoは本人や他の人が望んでいることと逆の答えの場合に使われるはずです。 もし、 Can I just give her change?と聞かれて、してはならない場合、答えがNo, I'm afraid you cannotとなるわけです。 Do you mind if I just give her changeでご質問の文体を使った場合は、Yes, I'm afraid so(I do)となります。（ちょっと無理やりっぽいですが・・・） 従って、I'm afraidを使うのは、相手または自分の意思（？）に反した場合ではないでしょうか。

afraid は「～をおそれて，心配して」という意味であり，I'm afraid ～というのは，「残念だけれども～だと思う」という意味合いになります。 ここでは，「どうぞ，かまいませんよ」という返答です。I'm afraid not. だと，「申し訳ありませんが，かまいませんよ」ということになり，おかしくなります。 "Is it fine there?"「晴れているかな」 "I'm afraid not."「残念だけど，晴れてないでしょうね」 のように用います。 I'm afraid so. は，「残念だけど，そうです」という意味です。 "Is it rainy there?"「雨が降っているのかな」 "I'm afraid so."「残念だけど，そうでしょうね」 のように用います。
