#3 さんと同じ意見です。「構文」の公式を当てはめようとすると、却って頭が混乱して来ますので、前から順に読んでいくのが良いと思います。それでも分からない時は、構文を調べて見るというのが、私の場合は順序です。 1. He is not too old to work. He is not too old (彼は歳を取りすぎているってことはないよ) to work (働くのにさ). → 彼はまだまだ現役で働けるよ(リタイヤーするのには早すぎるよ)。 2. The boy is too bright not to be able to do arithmetic. The boy is too bright (その子はとても賢いので。too は「とても」ぐらいの意味で受けておいて良いかと思います。ただ、too ですから、その後に来ることを「しりぞける」ということです。) not to be able to do arithmetic (「計算ができない」なんてことはない). → 頭のいい子だからね、計算なんてお茶の子さいさいなんだ。 お伝えしたいのは、文を最後まで読まないと意味が成り立たないということではなくて、"He is not too old" (彼は歳を取りすぎているなんてことはないよ), "The boy is too bright" (その子はすごく賢い・賢すぎる)だけでも意味は十分成り立っているということです。 それに対して、"to work."(働くのに), "not to be able to do arithmetic."(計算ができないためには * 不定詞の否定形はnot to ～の形になるのが習慣ですが、意味としては言わばto not ～ということです) という言葉が補助しています。

He is too old to drive a car. He is old enough to drive a car. という文は両方とも正しいと思います。 しかし、so that に書き換えると、 He is so old that he can't drive a car. ×He is so old that he can drive a car. となって、一番下は成立しません。 He is too 形容詞 to 不定詞. He is 形容詞 enough to 不定詞. のように、同じ形容詞、不定詞を使って、しかも、so ～ that に書き換えることができる例文があったら、教えてください。よろしくお願いいたいたします。

He is not what he was.（彼は昔の彼ではない）は He is not what he used to be.と書き換えられますが。 He is not what he was 10 years ago.を He is not what he used to be 10 years ago.としても文法的に正しいですか？ used to beを使う場合は～years agoと表現することはできないのでしょうか？ 専門家の方に回答をおねがいします。

- 不定詞？ not toかto notか
中学校で不定詞のときnotはtoの前に置けと習った記憶があります。そして今、英文を書いていて自信がなかったのでGoogleで"it is absurd not to be able to"と検索したら一件ヒットしました。今度は"it is abusrurd to not be able to"で検索したら４件ヒットしました。not toかto notどちらが正しいのでしょうか。

not too とnot enough 前者は「～あまり～でない」の意味にもなり、後者は「～まだ十分～でない」というほどの意味ですが、 例文としては、 This knife isn't sharp enough.（このナイフはあまり切れない） He is not too well today. （彼はきょうはあまり元気でない） ところで、 「昨日、河は凍結しなかった」のあと、 It was not too cold. It was not cold enough. のどちらがいいか、どうか、 また、「もう少し砂糖を加えてほしい」のあとに、 This coffee is not too sweet. This cofee is not sweet enough. のどちらがいいかで考えこんでいます。 どとらも「not enough」でいいと思うのですが、「not too(=very)」でもいいように思えます。あるいは後者はいわゆる「略表現」にあたり、こういうふうには使わないものなのか。 宜しくお願いします。
