文字を詰める

質問

編集専門用語かも知れませんがすみません・・・。
文字と文字の間を詰める、という「詰める」は英語で何と言えばよいでしょうか。

QuarkXPress や PageMaker などのレイアウトソフトでは「カーニング kerning」という用語が用いられます。余談ですが，私は仕事柄，教材作成でいつも使っていて，そのためか，ワードに慣れずに困っています。それはさておき，動詞 kern を kern the space between the letters と用いることもできます。この場合は「詰める」というより，「詰める，拡げる」を含めた「調整する」という感じでしょうか。一般的には，make the space between the letters smaller[tighter] とか，tighten[reduce] the space between the letters と言います。
Eng lish → English のような「詰める」ならば，delete[remove] the space between the letters と言います。

No.2さんの仰る「close」でよさそうです。
