ソル・フアナという修道女に関する本のレビュー（アメリカのアマゾンより）から引用させてもらった英文です。 This is balanced, penetrating examnation of Sor Juana and the elements that shaped her life. 'the elements'とありますが、このtheは何にかかっているのでしょうか。 elements that shaped her lifeが特有のものであることから、theがつくのか、それともこのtheはsor Juanaにかかっているのか・・（それならher elementsにすればよいと思うのですが） 私の意見としては前者の方が正しいのではないかと思っています。 なぜそう思うのかを下に記してみましたので、違うと思われるところが あれば指摘してください。 elementの基本的な意味を調べましたところ、 one part of feature of a whole system, plan, piece of work etc, especially that is basic or important.(ロングマンより） という説明がなされていましたが、 この文章のelementsは、彼女の人生に影響を与えた事柄のなかでの基本的なことをさしていると考えられます。人生に影響を与えた事柄というのは、人それぞれですよね。よってこのelementsは’特有’の意味を持っているので、theが使われるというように、私は考えました。

英文の質問 英文を読んでいて分からないところがありました。 globalizationについて書かれた文中に The basic structure of globalization is nationalism on which the concept of internationalism is based. という一文があり訳は 「グローバル化の基本的な構造は国家主義であり、国際主義の概念はそれに基づいている。」 であることは分かるのですが、何を意味するのかが分かりません。 僕にはglobalizationとnationalismはまったく別の考え方、というか 逆の考え方なのではないかと思えてしまいます。 この文だけでは分かりづらいかもしれませんが、専門的知識のある方などの この文の意味する内容が分かる人にglobalizationやnationalism のことも含めて説明していただきたいです。よろしくお願いします。 グローバル化については基礎的なことしかしらないので やさしい説明をしていただけると助かります。

お世話になります。 The suburbs are filled with sinners, some of whom occasionally repent. 上記の英文で some of whom を some of them にできるのでしょうか？できない場合はなぜできないのでしょうか？ 違いがわからないでいます。 ちなみに、意味は下記みたいな意味になると思っています（間違っていたらご指摘願います）。 「郊外には罪人で満たされており、そのうちの何人かはときおり後悔する」 どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

こんにちは。 長年海外生活してるんですが、未だに冠詞がピンときません。 具体的にはTHEを付ける時と付けない時の判別ができません。 例えば "call me when you have the chance" "call me when you have a chance" "the summer has come" "summer has come" "in the future" "in future" "the concept of the beauty" "the concept of beauty" "concept of the beauty" "concept of beauty" の違いなどなどです。 いつも適当にごまかしていますが、参考書の説明ではしっくりこないこともしばしばあります。適切なアドバイスお願いします。
