質問者さんへ、No. 2 で回答した Shimo-py です。 No. 3 の fieldsさん、ご指摘ありがとうございます。 その点について再びご説明いたします。 ◆（２）の「more teeth」について、 「この more が much の比較級で、そして、much の内容は挿入句の形で示されている"white and large and even"だ」 という解釈は、不可能です。 much （あるいはそれに由来する more）が、後出の形容詞の肩代わりを一時的に引き受けるという用法は、ありません。 40代の女性ということとの関わりで言えば、この文を言っている人は、相手の女性の歯が気になって気になって仕方がないわけなのです。つまり実際に生物学上の歯の数に言及しているのではなく、その均整の取れた歯並びや白さから、歯の数が多く見えるというような印象（impression）だったという表現になっているのです。 ◆（３）について。 １つ目の that はおっしゃる通り、"Just a bite"を繰り返したものです。しかし、２つ目はやはり more は名詞です。that more という用法は、「難しい語法」ではありません。普通に使います。 既出の形容詞に that をかぶせて使う用法は、ごく当たり前の用法なのです。試みに that でその用法を調べてみてください。例文は簡単なもののはずです。 「than 以下を"as an excuse for conversation"にかけて読んでいる」という覚えはありません。よく訳を読んでください。as 以下は eat that more を修飾しており、わたしはそのつもりで訳しております。 二つ目に出てくる more を前の than にかけて読むことは、この文の場合（つまり that more となっている場合）は不可能です。 ◆一応、相当の自信をもって英語にかかわっているつもりですが、なにぶん、研究中の身であります。こうしたご指摘をしてくださることを、非常に有難く受け止めます。 今回の件に関して、fields さんのご指摘から受けた点について、私の説明はどこも誤っていない、と判断しています。

That doesn't make any sense, though. You say you didn't send me any e-mails because you didn't want to bother me when Erika was over. But then I am suppose to e-mail you everyday even though I have a friend over and I'm super busy? Isn't that more bothersome for me than receiving your e-mails? And you're not the only one sending e-mails >_> I always respond to you when I can.

That responsibility vanishes with compulsory retirement and this can be emotionally devastating. Even people who have looked forward to retirement can find that, after the first few months, and they can become very depressed even, sometimes, to the point where they give up trying to live. This is why it is so important for retired people to make sure that they have some other interest in their life, and more than just one if at all possible. Many retired people take up another responsibility where they can still feel needed, such as voluntary work. Gardening is particularly popular, because a garden needs to be looked after-it can't be neglected or it will quickly turn wild. So gardeners know that their efforts are necessary and worthwhile. Some people develop hobbies such as travelling, or learn a new sport, such as golf or bowls. All these are ways for people to develop other sources of self-esteem, to compensant for being without paid employment.
