洋書などを読んでいるんですけど。。。

こんにちは、アメリカ在住のoyoyo22です。 最近お読みになった本のラインナップを拝見すると、特定の興味分野があって読んでおられるのかなぁ？と推察しました。（特に最初の３冊） 興味のある分野の本を読むことは、英語の上達にも繋がるので正しい選択だと思います。 （それだけをふまえてお勧めの本は、Dan Brown の the Da Vinci Code です。街行く多くの人が読んでいるのを見かけるベストセラーです。私も夢中で読んでしまいました。） ただ、ご本人もおっしゃっている通り、これまで読まれた本はトピックの性質上、ワンセンテスの長い文、堅苦しい表現などが多いのではないかと思います。 文化的な背景もかなり違い、翻訳文でも飲み込むのに結構苦労する分野なのではないでしょうか？ 学生さんということですし、もう少し軽めで、年齢的に共感できるものか、日本の作家の作品で英訳されているものなどは、楽に読めて楽しめ、なおかつ英語の勉強にはいいのではないでしょうか？ そういう点では、J.D. Salinger のThe Catcher in the Rye（ライ麦畑で捕まえて）がお勧めです。 また、新刊本なので日本ですぐに手に入るのかわかりませんが、私が最近買って夢中で読んでいるのが、Mark Haddon という作家のデビュー作であるthe cuious incident of the dog in the night-time です。 あとは、吉本ばななの本や、村上春樹の本はたくさん英訳されています。英語ですが、日本の文化背景が描かれているので、まったく知らない土地の文化が語られているよりもずっと楽に読めますよ。 つまり、英文法的にはシンプルで、トピックに興味があり、文化背景になじみのある本を読まれたらどうかと思います。 お勧めの本を紹介してくれという質問ではないと思うのですが、経験上、読む本の選択は重要です。 私も最初は学術書の難しいものばかりを読まされて、読解力がないのかも、などと悩んだりしたのですが、ふとした拍子に、面白い小説を読んだらすいすい読めてしまい、それをきっかけにして、読解力一般が向上しました。 というわけで、だまされたと思って一度試してみてくださいね。

こんにちは。 オーストラリアのABC newsを聞いているのですが、選挙の ことについて報じている際に何度となくwormという単語が 出てきます。 １．The Nine Network used the worm to monitor undecided voters, two-thirds of them declared Mr Rudd the winner ２．The Government derided Mr Rudd's performance as "bumper sticker sloganeering", and dismissing the opinionated worm as meaningless entertainment. ３．The controversial worm, tracking the views of an audience of undecided voters watching last night's television debate, ４．I think we can see why the Prime Minister didn't want the worm. 同一のニュースの中に上記のように沢山でてきたのですが、 辞書を見ても適切や訳語が探せません。どういう意味なので しょうか・・よろしくお願い致します。
