almostが、 （１）動詞を修飾する場合は、 ・もうすこしで～するとこだった。 （２）形容詞や、副詞などを修飾する場合は、 ・ほとんど、 になります。 https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/almost （一応、英和辞書へのリンク） ＞＞He almost spent the research fee. これは、動詞を修飾しているので、「彼は、もうすこしで研究費をつかうとこだった。」つまり、「研究費は使用していない。」という意味になりますが、 ＞＞彼は研究費を全く使用していなかった。と訳はなるそうです。 このように訳すのには、、、疑問が残ります。

"nearly"と"almost"の使い分けについて勉強していたのですが、理解できず、悩んでいます。 文法書に"nearly"と"almost"は意味がほぼ同じで、交換可能であるが、以下の状況ではどちらかが使用される、と言う内容の事が書いてあり、以下の条件が書いてありました。 １．not, no, none, neverなどの否定語の前では"almost"が使用される ２．比較・測定できる位置や時間以外では"almost"が使用される ３．very, so, not等の後では"nearly"が使用される このうち、１番と３番については理解できるのですが、２番の"比較・測定できる位置や時間以外"という意味がサッパリ分からないんです。 ちなみに、２番の例文では、 I almost think she is wrong.は正しいが、I nearly think she is wrong.は正しくないと書いてありました。 本当に分からないので、どなたか教えていただけないでしょうか。 よろしくお願いします！

(Nicky Hayes, Psychologyより) 上記の英文中の"social meaning"の訳を高校生でも分かるように教えていただけますか？（実は、以前、別のサイトでもうかがったのですが、残念ながら自分の理解力のなさで、諦めました。）ある人に聞いたら、「実質的意味合い」だとおっしゃっていました。前後関係で、この文の言いたいこと（細かいことは間違っていたけれど、本質的なところはあっていた）は分かるのですが、social meaning→「実質的意味合い」というふうになるのが、高校生にどう説明していいか分かりません。それとも別のいい訳がありますか。

中２の教科書でE.T.の話がでてきます。 その中で He is all alone. という文があり、学校では彼はひとりぼっちです。と日本語訳したそうです。 そこで質問はall が入るのと入らないのでは意味が違うかと子供が聞いてきました。 確かにalone は一人で言う意味があり、He is alone. も一人ぼっちとは訳さないのでしょうか。 子供にもわかるようにアドバイスをよろしくお願いします。
