Negative Effects of Shopping Malls

  • Shopping malls have had a significant impact on American life, but not all of it has been positive. Many small businesses have been forced to close as larger corporations take their customers. This has led to fewer independently owned businesses and less local control over jobs. Additionally, malls have negative effects on the environment, often being built on important land for animals and replacing trees and grass with buildings and parking lots. Furthermore, malls are typically located far from town centers, resulting in increased air pollution and heavy traffic.
  • The rise of shopping malls in America has had both positive and negative consequences. On one hand, they have transformed the shopping experience for many Americans, providing a wide range of shops and services in one place. However, the dominance of large corporations in malls has led to the closure of many smaller businesses, reducing local job opportunities and individual entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the construction of malls on valuable land has resulted in the destruction of natural habitats and contributed to the loss of biodiversity. Additionally, the reliance on cars to access malls has increased air pollution and traffic congestion in surrounding areas.
  • Shopping malls have become a central feature of American consumer culture, offering convenience and a wide variety of choices for consumers. However, their impact has not been entirely positive. The presence of large corporations in malls has led to the decline of small, independently-owned businesses and reduced local control over jobs. Moreover, the development of malls often comes at the expense of natural habitats, as they are frequently built on important land for the environment. Additionally, the location of malls outside of town centers contributes to increased car usage, resulting in higher levels of air pollution and traffic congestion.

They have sometime been built on land that is important for the survival of animals. Wherever they are built, they cover large areas with buildings and parking lots- instead of trees or grass. Thus, they contribute to the general loss of nature. And finally, malls are usually far from any town center, so people must use cars to get there.

While shopping malls changed American life, not all of their effects have been positive. Most of the shops and services found in malls are parts of large corpora- tions. These businesses have taken away customers from smaller shops in the area and forced them to close. That has meant fewer individually owned businesses and less local control over jobs In addition, malls are harmful to the environment. But are such techniques in fact helpful to patients? It is of course important to assess any form of treatment, and given that patients vary enormously in their problems and their capabilities, group studies of mnemonic techniques are unlikely to be very satisfactory. Fortunately, there are techniques that were specially devised to investigate the effects of treatment on a single patient. Most of these originated in the operant conditioning laboratory; they have been adapted for clinical purposes by behaviorally minded clinicians, and are now being used to assess the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation. They tend not to be well known to cognitive psychologists, who are generally much more familiar with large group designs, or in the case of neuropsychology to single case studies that are concerned with assessing and describing the patient’s deficits, rather than evaluating treatment. 。

The French are not the only people to eat snails. Italians and Spaniards also enjoy them. In fact, at one time the French considered snails to be a typically Italian dish. It is possible that the custom of eating snails entered France from Italy. Even so, France is now considered the home of snail cuisine. The large snails found in the vineyards of the Burgundy region are considered the tastiest. The snails are usually seasoned with garlic butter and parsley, and sold in their shells. You may purchase one or two dozen, take them home, pop them in the oven, and eat them when the butter melts. They are starters for an evening meal. The French do not eat snails all year round. They are eaten at home mainly at festive times such as Christmas, New Year's Eve, and other special occasions. They are also eaten with a sumptuous meal in a restaurant. Snails are, of course, available throughout the year. What is funny is that you have to buy them from fishmongers. Frogs' legs are also a favorite dish of the French. They say "eat frogs' legs", not "eat frogs". This is probably because they eat only the hind legs and the white flesh on the back. Just like snails, frogs are seasoned with garlic and parsley, and so they are easily cooked. However, you now have much less opportunity to eat frogs. The reason is clear: they have become very expensive. Oddly enough, frogs have also been sold at fish shops since long ago.

Ovsyanikow explains ,“What is especially attractive in polar bears in terms of conservation is that it is an umbrella species. It is a large predator which is at the top of the food chain in the Arctic.” This means that biologists can tell a lot about the condition of the Arctic environment by studying the polar bear. It also means that the helth of the polar bear species reflects the health of a number of other species in the Arctic region. As the people and scientists watch the bears, the animals can be observed desperately trying to find something to eat in the frozen earth-they even try to find something to eat in the frozen earth-they even try to eat grass. “They are hungry,”observes polar bear guide John Bykerk. At this time of year, the built-up fat reserves that have kept the polar bears alive since the ice melted, have served their purpose. Sadly, the bears' bodies are starving for energy by now, and some are beginning to look thin. It is not surprising that the bears are hungry; it has been a long time since they have eaten anything at all. Bykerk explains, “Unless they are lucky enough to find some dead beluga whale or some dead seal, thy have essentially gone four months at this point without having a bite to eat”

There is some evidence that these improvements in the characteristics of elders have resulted in more positive views of aging. Tibbitts claimed that during the past 30 to 40 years, U.S. society has moved from holding negative stereotypes of old people to holding positive views in which elders are seen as being able to contribute to the quality of life for themselves, their communities, and society as a whole. Schonfield even argued that the assumption of negative attitudes toward old people is a "social myth" perpetuated by the gerontological literature. We will be examining these attitudes in derail in Chapter 2, but there does appear to be a substantial shift from negative to positive attitudes. The improvements in the physical, mental, social, and economic characteristics of elders have been so marked, and there have been so many programs and services developed for elders only, that many have begun to criticize these programs as discrimination in favor of the aged, or positive ageism. We will be discussing examples of positive ageism throughout this book; but the ones that have drawn most criticism so far are the Medicare program and some features of the Social Security System, such as the automatic cost of living increases in benefits and the tax-exemption of Social Security benefits for most elders. Perhaps these programs have been criticized the most because they involve the most money. Critics are beginning to argue that since elders are no longer deprived economically and since they are now much better off mentally, physically, and socially than they were in the past, it is no longer necessary or fair to continue the enormous expense of these special supports and programs available only to elders. Some argue that the way to reduce positive ageism is to make these supports and programs available to all ages on the basis of need. For example, they recommend that the national health insurance, which only elders now enjoy, be extended to all ages. It is clear that positive ageism is becoming an important issue and promises to become even more important as we are faced with more older people and more expensive programs for "seniors only."

The second way involves sending large numbers of bicycles to African countries. People in developed countries give uesd bicycles to aid organizations that repair them and design trailers to use with them to carry water and bags of rice.
