以下の英文についてご教授お願いいたします。 I'm looking for a hotel cheeper than 70＄ a night around here. than70は比較対象は何なのでしょうか？比較級であれば （it is） 70＄とかになるのでしょうか？もしくは単に慣用表現なのでしょうか？ また、続けて 「（70ドル以下の）ホテを知っていますか？」と聞く場合、Do you knowの後に代名詞は何を置けばよいでしょうか？若しくは単にDo you know any good hotels?と聞けばよいのでしょうか？ 流れとしては、Excuse me,I'm looking for a hotel cheeper than 70＄ a night around here.Do you know~?なのですが。 よろしくお願いいたします。

１。than70は比較対象は何なのでしょうか？ 一晩70ドル「より」です。 ２。比較級であれば （it is） 70＄とかになるのでしょうか？ it is とかbe 動詞がなくても比較はできます。例えば a structure taller than the Empire State Building 「エンパイアステートビルより高い建物」です。 ３。もしくは単に慣用表現なのでしょうか？ 文でなくて句の一部の場合には、ごく普通の言い方です。 ４。また、続けて 「（70ドル以下の）ホテを知っていますか？」と聞く場合、Do you knowの後に代名詞は何を置けばよいでしょうか？ この場合は any とか one などが使えます。 ５。若しくは単にDo you know any good hotels?と聞けばよいのでしょうか？ それも可能です。 ６。Excuse me, I'm looking for a hotel cheaper than $70 a night around here. Do you know of any? とも。

I'm looking for a hotel cheeper than 70＄ a night around here. を略さないで正しく言おうとすると、 I'm looking for a hotel whose rate(fare) is cheeper than $70 a night around here. つまり$70の比較の対象は、the rate になるはずです。ところがそれが無く、こんな形から省略されているのが想定されます。 I'm looking for a hotel which is cheeper than $70 a night around here. そうすると、もし次の文がありえて、意味を持てばkonan3939さんの疑問は解消するように思いますがいかがでしょうか？ The hotel is cheap. この言い方は、ありです。単独で見ると「このホテルは安っぽい」と言う印象が強いですが、「このホテルの料金は安い」の意味とも取れ、もとの比較の文にすれば逆に$70 a nightと比較しているので「料金が安い」ことがはっきりわかります。 $70と比較されているのは、hotel と言う事になりますが、上のようにとらえていくと、もう少しくどく言うと、hotelが持つ特徴の中の料金が比較対象と言うことになるでしょう。 cheapでピンとこなければ、こんな言い方あるよねと思い浮かべれば良いと思います。 The hotel is [small, clean, quiet, nice, white, ...]. > また、続けて 「（70ドル以下の）ホテを知っていますか？」と聞く場合、Do you knowの後に代名詞は何を置けばよいでしょうか？若しくは単にDo you know any good hotels?と聞けばよいのでしょうか？ それで良いです。any good hotel とかany good one とか単数にしたほうが自然ではあります。

比較級の than は本来接続詞であり、 節として説明できるように、何かを補いたくなります。 そこから He is taller than I. のような古臭い英語を日本では習ってきたのですが、 than me が普通の英語です。 節として than I am (tall) のような再現をせず、ただ「私より」 というのであれば than は前置詞的に than me でいいのです。 そういう発想にたって、 He ran faster than the record. とか、 than usual, than necessary など、節を使って説明できない表現があり得ます。 今回のような cheaper than 値段というのも同じようなもの。 such a hotel とか、 any hotels like that とか。
