再度「補足コメント」を拝読しました。 お尋ねの疑問点について、なるべく具体的にお答えします。 ＞〔折り返して（{C}と{D}を加えて）B〕を掘らなければならない ⇒「折り返してBを掘らなければならない」とは、 「基点（ニューヨーク）からサンフランシスコまでの逆コース、すなわち、サンフランシスコからニューヨークまでの距離にB、つまり、共同溝を掘らなければならない」 という意味です。 ＞「地下鉄トンネルと地下室を加えたガス水道管」 ⇒最初の訳文で、「地下鉄トンネルと地下室（の用途分）を加えて」としましたが、カッコに入れて補充した部分の位置がまずかったと思います。すみません。 次のように訂正させていただきますね。ついでに「地下室」の「室」も削除します。つまり、ここは、 「現存する迷路のような地下鉄トンネルや数千の超高層ビル（の用途分）の３階建ての深さの地下を加えて」 となります。 地下鉄やビルがあれば、当然その地下部分に共同溝を敷設しなければならなくなりますよね。そうすると 「サンフランシスコ‐ニューヨーク間に加えて、（都市部の）地下鉄やビルの用途分としても共同溝を掘らなければならない」 ということになるわけでしょう。これが修飾語を取り除き、簡単に言い換えたこの部分の骨組みです。 ＞本当に、コンマ抜けの可能性は考えられませんでしょうか？ ⇒最初からカンマなしで読んでいましたので、少なくとも私には、その可能性は考えられません。もちろん、カンマがあれば「読みやすくなる」という意味ではあった方がいいでしょうけれども、「なければ間違い」と言えるほどではない、という意味です。 以上、再々伸まで。

The Ottoman forces opposing the Australians at Lone Pine consisted of two battalions from the 47th Regiment, under the command of Tevfik Bey. Sitting further back in divisional reserve, to the north-east on "Mortar Ridge", was a battalion from the 57th Regiment, which had been relieved from its position on the front line north of Lone Pine by an Arab battalion of the 72nd Regiment. The positions north and south of the Ottoman line at Lone Pine were held by the 125th Regiment at Johnston's Jolly in the north and the 48th Regiment in the south along Pine Ridge. The width of the front of the attack was 160 yards (150 m) and the distance between the two trench lines was about 60–100 yards (55–91 m). To reduce the distance to be crossed, the Australians projected a number of tunnels towards the Ottoman trenches from The Pimple. Immediately after the attack, one of these tunnels was to be opened along its length to make a communications trench through which reinforcements could advance without having to cross the exposed ground. Some of the attackers would have to make the advance over open ground from the Australian trench line. To provide some measure of protection for these men, three mines were set by engineers to make craters in which they could seek shelter. The preliminary bombardment was stretched over three days—initially confined to a limited "slow shoot", building up to a final intense bombardment an hour before the assault—and was successful in cutting much of the barbed wire that the Ottomans had placed in front of their position. The preparation stage of the attack began at 2:00 p.m. on 6 August, when the Australians detonated the three mines they had dug in front of the Ottoman lines, in an attempt to create cover for the advancing troops. Two and a half hours later the final heavy preliminary bombardment commenced, with Australian, British and New Zealand artillery batteries firing on the Ottoman trench line, while naval gunfire support from the British cruiser HMS Bacchante provided counter-battery fire on Ottoman artillery positioned along Third Ridge. Retreating into tunnels which had been cut as part of mining operations, the majority of the forward Ottoman troops were able to find shelter from the bombardment that lasted for an hour.

私はフランス語を過去に学習したことがあり、英語もある程度分かるので、英語で書かれたフランス語の教材でフランス語を復習しているんですが、英語の説明でちょっと引っかかるphrasal verbに出くわしました。 “Enchante”is not as flowery as it sounds: it simply means “delighted to meat you.” In an informal context, you simply respond with Bonjour or Bonsoir, depending on the time of day. Young people, close acquaintances― and some TV personalities attempting to be laid back ― say Salut! ここでつっかえたのは、laid backです。辞書で lay backを引いても載っていませんでした。どなたか、教えてください。

どうもこんばんは、大変お世話になっております。 ここまで詳しく説明頂いて、非常に分かりやすいです。 ようやく、日本語の意味を理解いたしました。 英語以前に、自分の国語読解力が及ばなかったと反省しております。 そのせいで、お時間をおとらせしてしまい、 大変、申し訳ありません。 ようやく、お示しの訳文のあらわす日本語の意味がつかめました。 しかし、やはりどうもおかしいと思うのです。 だって、6200マイルの下水道を掘って、その折り返しに3200万マイルのガス水道管を掘ったら、 往復どころか、基点であるニューヨークを通り越してしまいます。 単に「折り返して（その往復分に）」と言っているだけなのだから、 帰りの距離がぴったり行きの距離に一致する必要はないけれども、 あまりにも行きと帰りでバランスが取れません。 Theyは下水道やガス水道管を掘りたいのではなく、 それよりも鉛直下方向、地中深い場所に、巨大ターミナルを建設したいのであり、 そうした文の前後関係からも、お示しの訳文が、どうしても納得できないのです。 dig through O の、このthroughなのですが、 ここでは、 ０に沿って水平方向に掘るという意味ではなく、 ０を避けつつ、その周りを丹念に迂回したり、 Oよりも更に深い場所へと掘り進む、 という意味なのではないでしょうか？ ですので、 dig through O1 enough to reach to San Francisco and back ,←（コンマ抜け） O2 plus O3 and O4 として、 「サンフランシスコまでの往復分に匹敵する横の長さのO1、 O2 そのうえ O3とO4、以上O１～O４の地中の建造物を全て避けつつ、それとは別の場所に 巨大ターミナルを掘る必要がある」 という意味であると自分は考えます。 少なくとも、それ以外に自分は納得できませんでしたので、 自分の納得できる答えを見つけた、という意味で、 それが正しいのかどうかは別としても、 これで本質門に関する自分の中のクエスチョンマークが消滅いたしました。 ですので、これで本質門は終了しようと存じます。 コンマが抜けていたため、おかしな文となってしまっていたのです。 Nakay702様はプロであるがゆえに、 その誤った文から得られる最適の解を正しく導いたのだと存じます。 しかし、そもそも、私どもが提示したもともとの文が間違っていたのだと判断いたします。 いずれにしても、皆様に非はまったくありません。 Nakay702様、この度のお力添え、頭が上がりません。 お忙しかったでしょうに、ここまで親身に御回答していただいて、 御厚情深く感謝致しております。 どうも有難うございました。 寒くなって参りますが、Nakay702様のご健勝をお祈りいたしております。 敬具
