追記 てっきり職場などで実際にあった話かと思っていたら テキストにあったんですね。 恐らく、saidとあるのでそこで勘違いされたのかと思います。 memoが主語なのでsaidは言うという訳ではなく、書いている、くらいに訳します。 全体訳）水曜に出されたメモには、実習生は3週間ここにいるだろうと書いてあった。 となり、誰かが話していたというような内容は、文から読み取れません。 よって、3週間とは、水曜から数えるということになります。

小生会社で人から聞かれて急に自信がなくなったのでお聞ききする次第です。 仕事で相手先に電話して不在のとき、電話に出た人が (1)Mr.Smith won't be back until Wednesday next week. といったら水曜日から来るのか、木曜日から来るのかどちらでしたっけ？ あとこれも今思い出したのですが (2)He won't be here until Wednesday next week. (3)He won't be here through Wednesday next week. の場合はどうだったでしょうか？

「キャンパスの桜は入学式のころには満開でしょう」の英訳で The cherry blossoms on campus will be in full bloom about the time (when) your entrance ceremony is held. とあるのですが、これを2つにわけるとどういう文になるでしょうか? おそらく「キャンパスの桜は満開になるでしょう」と「入学式のころ桜は満開です」になると思うのですが。。。 前者はそのままThe cherry blossoms on campus will be in full bloom.だと思うのですが、後者はどういう文になるのでしょう? それとここはheld(保持する)でないといけないのでしょうか?「状態を維持する」ような感じにはどうしても思えないのですが

些細な疑問にお付き合いいただきまして有難うございます。 直接話法と間接話法について、 http://www.alc.co.jp/myalc/wlsdata/bpr/grammar_v/grule19.html を見ながら考えてみました。 ・水曜日に出されたメモに「この先3週間ここにいる」と書いてあった場合 直接話法: The memo issued on Wednesday said, "The new trainees will be here in 3 weeks." 間接話法: The memo issued on Wednesday said the new trainees would be here in 3 weeks. →間接話法の in 3 weeks の「起点」は「水曜日」 ・（ちょっとレアケースかもしれませんが、） 水曜日に出されたメモに「この先25日間ここにいる」と書いてあったとして、 話をしているのが、水曜日から4日経過後で、この先21日間（＝3週間）ここにいる場合 直接話法: The memo issued on Wednesday said, "The new trainees will be here in 25 days." 間接話法: The memo issued on Wednesday said the new trainees would be here in 3 weeks. →間接話法の in 3 weeks の「起点」は「話をしている時点」 上記のように考えると、 The memo issued on Wednesday said the new trainees would be here in 3 weeks. は、「起点」は「一意に定まらない」となりそうですが、この考え方は正しいでしょうか？？ ご意見いただけますと幸いです。
