サン・テグジュペリの言葉です。 True love begins when nothing is looked for in return. (本当の愛は、もはや何一つ報酬を望まないところに始まるのだ) この英文の"when"は文法的にはどういうものなのでしょうか？

普通に接続詞「～するとき」でしょうね。 ときもところも空間の一つ。 翻訳した人は「ところ」と感じたんでしょう。 もっとも，接続詞 when は at the time when ～という関係副詞が出発点です。

接続詞「…する時」です。 日本語訳の「ところ」に惑わされたのでしょう。普通は「…時に」とします。訳者の意図がどうだったのか分かりませんが、文全体の中で考えれば自然な意味になっています。

まず、サン・テグジュペリの言葉ですから、元はフランス語で、その英訳と和訳かと思います。 従って、和訳から英訳を対応させて考えるのは、無理な場合もあるかと思います。 このwhenは明らかに接続詞です。 When nothing is looked for in return, true love begins. のように、入れ替えても言えるので、接続詞と判断できます。 日本語の「ところ」という訳ですが、 「報酬など何一つ求めないとき、真の愛が始まる。」→これが英文の直訳です。 しかし、報酬など何一つ求めないところから、真の愛が始まる」とするほうが日本語はわかりやすいので、翻訳の１つのテクニックを使って訳したものだと思います。 以上、ご参考になればと思います。

英文法の参考書に It goes without saying that love is one of the most important themes in literature. という英文の訳が「愛が文学でかなり重要なテーマであることは言うまでもない。」 となっていました。しかし、most は、「最も」という意味なので、上記のような訳にはならないと思います。なぜ、上記のような訳になるのでしょうか？
