何故、過去形？

確かに，settle の時点と，decide の時点はずれています。 しかし，until 以下は decide にかかるのでなく，to 以下， さらには stay という動詞にのみかかります。 マリコをアメリカに連れてかえり，彼女が落ち着くまでいっしょにいようと決心した。 落ち着くまでいっしょにいよう これだけのつながりが stay (with her) until she settled down stay と settled の時点だけが問題で，decide は別です。 decide to ～で to ～は「～しようと」決心する この不定詞の部分で決心とのずれは出ます。 あと，to take という原形と settle という現在を同じ，としてはいけません。 不定詞というのは原形，これは時間がないのです。 でも，until の後は述語として時制が出ます。 不定詞の原形というのと現在形は違います。 I wanted to go there. これって，wanted が過去なら，行ったのも過去です。 to の後は原形。 I wanted to think he was free. 彼はひまだと思いたかった。 wanted と全体が過去のことなら，was です。 不定詞は原形だけど，全体は過去のこと。 こういう全体として過去という時間が流れている。 こういうのを広い意味で時制の一致ということができます。 だから，to take/stay これは原形だけど， decided によって（ずれがあるとはいえ）過去のことには違いないので， この脈々と流れる過去の時間に合わせて settled なのです。
