いくつか質問があります。よろしくお願いします。 1)The popularity of a website depends on its content. popularityはtheでwebsiteはaが付くのはどうしてでしょうか。 2)So much for small talk, let's get down to business. なぜbusinessにはtheがつかないのでしょうか。 3)He accumulated a tremendous fortune. たくさんありそうなのに単数形なのはなぜでしょうか。 4)integrate a wide range of functions into this cool gadget. 和訳は「このすごい機器に多岐にわたる機能を統合させる」とありますが、このwide range of functionsというところが、ofをどういう用法で用いているのかよくわかりません。

1)popularityはtheでwebsiteはaが付くのはどうしてでしょうか。 →the websiteも可能ですが、その場合、１つの特定のお互いにどれだかわかるサイトのことです。aにすると、one of the websitesの意味となり、一般論となります。どんなwebsiteでもという意味に近い表現です。 2)なぜbusinessにはtheがつかないのでしょうか。 →the がつく場合もあります。 Things go south, however, once the chevalier meets the noble gentry and gets down to the business of solving the mystery.（Oxford例文辞典より） この場合、the がありますね。 では、お示しの文にtheがないのは？ 普通、この場合、いわゆるビジネスというより、課せられた用事、用務を表現しています。さあ、ひと仕事しようかーーみたいな日本語のひと仕事は、ペンキを塗ることかもしれないし、宛名書きかもしれません。おおよそビジネスとはちがう意味ですね。でも、仕事であってもかまわないのです。とにかく、作業、仕事にとりかかるというときは、抽象度が高いので無冠詞なのです。どんな仕事かではなく、作業開始みたいな意味なのです。 3)たくさんありそうなのに単数形なのはなぜでしょうか。 →財産はいくら膨らんでも複数ではありません。a very large amount of moneyの意味で、a fortuneと言います。株とか土地とかの具体的な所有物は複数もありますが、こちらは1人に対しては複数になりません。 4)このwide range of functionsというところが、ofをどういう用法で用いているのかよくわかりません。 →これはa range of という言い方の問題です。 範囲や幅を表す言い方です。 a wide range of cultural influences 広範な文化的影響 a huge range of colors 多彩な色 a full range of new cars 新型の車全種類 たとえば a kind of book a part of body のような言い方と少し似ている表現かと思います。 以上、ご参考になればと思います。

of 名詞 ＝ 形容詞 になることは理解しているのですが、 下記のような二文を見つけ、疑問に思いました。 １） His reading is of wide range 彼は読書範囲が広い ２） His reading is of a wide range. 彼の読書は広範囲にわたる。 どちらも of 名詞 を形容詞として使っており 意味もほとんど同じだと思うのですが、2）の方は、 a wide range と「a」 がついています。 両者の微妙な意味の違いとしたら 1）は 「広い」の意味を名詞にした ２）は 「a」がつくことで「広範囲」という名詞になった という理解でよろしいのでしょうか？ どうかよろしくお願いします。
