基本的な事だと思いますがよろしくお願いします
以下の英文があったのですが解らない所があります Melvil Deweyという人について話しています。 "He invented the number system we use to find books in the library. If it weren't for Melvil Dewey, We would never be able to find anything." If it weren't for の部分が分からないのとここで使われているBe動詞がなぜ was ではなくwereなのかということが知りたいです。 よろしくお願いします。

いわゆる Dewey decimal の話しですね。 彼は、図書館で我々が本を見つける番号の付け方を発明した。 メルビル・デューイ無しに我々は何も探せなかっただろう。 ここで使われているのは be の subjunctive の形です。 If it were not for については下記などをご参照ください。 http://homepage1.nifty.com/Liberty/eigo2/i2.htm

仮定法過去という用法です。be動詞はすべてwereを使うという決まりごとがあります。 http://www.eibunpou.net/10/chapter25/25_2.html

- turn out の意味？
子供用洋書 ナルニア ６２ページを読んでいます。 "Let's give it try. All keep close together. We ought to be a match for one beaver if it turns out to be an enemy." この文のif it turns out to be an enemy.のところ、turn outの意味を調べたら、意味がいっぱいあって、こんがらがっています。 turns out = find out と考えて、「もしそのビーバーは敵かを知るためにも」みたいな意味でしょうか？ なんか、もっと具体的にturn out の意味を知りたいのですが、どなたか説明できる方おりましたら、よろしくお願いします！！！
