Field work, or the collection of data, can be a very exciting part of a researcher’s career. At the same time, field work can be very tedious because doing it properly requires a lot of patience. A sociologist may go to a workplace and spend all day observing how the people there act, or may interview hundreds of people as part of a survey. In marine biology, field work may consist of going out on the ocean to capture, tag, and release animals. An archaeologist might supervise a dig, where ancient objects are unearthed, classified, and archived. As the above suggests, field work takes a lot of planning and organization. Also, it is important to follow routine procedures to make sure that the data are collected properly. Sometimes, however, a great discovery is made, and the atmosphere at the site becomes electric. For example, it must have been incredibly exciting for Gen Suwa to find the first specimen of A. ramidus, but then two years of painstaking work was needed to find enough fossils to construct the skeleton. Both sides of field work are necessary. The exciting discoveries show the researchers that they are on the right track, and the routine procedures support the validity of the newly-made discoveries.

Scientific investigation is not only used to advance science - sometimes scientific procedures are used to investigate a crime or to provide evidence in a criminal trial. This application of scientific methods for legal use is the fast-growing area known as "forensics." For example, when DNA, blood, a fingerprint, hair, or other tissue is found at a crime scene, investigators can often match the sample to the person from whom it came. Now we have learned that DNA samples that are found at the crime scene may be able to give us information about a person's eye color. As exciting as this development is, we should keep in mind that matching DNA from a sample to a suspect is still not very accurate. In fact, the most important use of DNA samples may be to eliminate people from suspicion. It is not possible to state with nearly 100% certainty that a particular DNA sample is from a particular person. However, it is possible to state with certainly that a particular sample did not come from a particular person. In recent years many people who were wrongly convicted of crimes have been cleared because their DNA was completely different from DNA found at the scene. Forensic medicine is very important, but it must be used very carefully. Nobody should be convicted of a crime based solely on DNA evidence.

The article mentions that the 50 research subjects were divided into three groups. Thus, each group likely had 16 or 17 members. With such a small sample size, the findings can only be described as preliminary. Even so, the results are very interesting because earlier studies with animals suggested that reduced-calorie diets may improve memory. This study, with its admittedly small sample, backs up the original research and makes it clear that the research should be continued. To be sure, a study done with a larger sample would seem to be the next step. Surprisingly, samples do not have to be very large in order to make accurate predictions about a population. In fact, using a sample is actually more accurate than if data on every member of a large group were collected. For one thing, with a large population, the time required to get data on each member would mean that conditions might change between the beginning of the data collection and the final analysis of the data. Another problem would be that more mistakes in entering the data would occur if too many members were surveyed. Thus, if a proper sample size is selected, and data are collected properly, an accurate prediction about a population can be made even with a relatively small sample.

Systems theory is a fascinating new discipline. By looking at each part of a system and determining the effect it has on other parts, a map of the process can be made. This analysis helps make it clear how changes in one part of the system affect other parts and the system as a whole. A common example now is the melting of ice in the Arctic. If the summer temperature stays under a particular point, the amount of melted ice stays small. However, if the average temperature of the air in the summer is too high, the system might enter a state where all the ice melts. This happens because of a feedback loop: since ice reflects a lot of sunlight away from the Arctic, if there is less ice than usual, then more water will absorb sunlight and warm up. With more warm water present, more ice melts, and more water gets warmed up; this cycle continues, and accelerates. Soon, there is no more ice left. As for the mercury cycle, the ocean methylation process is not completely understood, so we are not yet able to figure out how to prevent mercury from methylating and entering the food chain. Once the process is understood, we hope to be able to control the amount of methylation so as to protect our marine food supply.
