before / in front of They stood wondering before the castle they's discovered. この英文の場合in front of じゃなくてbeforeの理由を教えて下さい http://www.geocities.jp/gyouseikowa/eigo/before-infrontof.html ここを参考にしましたけど、わかりませんでした。発見したのが、立っていたときより前だからbeforeなんでしょうか？

これだけでは両方に取れますね。まあ今立っている事態から始まっていますから場所的な叙述と見る人が多いかも知れません。 立ってるんじゃなくて、もっと抽象的なはじまり They did not quite understand where the castle was located「城の位置はどこにあったのか彼らは知らなかった」 ということなら「～より以前は」という時間的な解釈が可能かと思います。 He stood before me. 「彼は僕の前に立ちはだかった」を「僕以前に（僕が死ぬ前に）彼が立っていた」と解釈するのは可成り凝り性の人ですね。 He was the president before me. なら「彼は僕の前に社長だった」と解釈するのが自然だと思います。 纏めれば、ここではどちらでもいい、この場合時間と誤解される心配が無いから before を使ったのだと思います。

before, in front of は同義語ですからどちらを使っても構いません。（ご質問の趣旨がよくわかりません）

参考にしたサイトに「この２つを使い分けるとすれば、基本的には before は時間的関係を表す場合に使われ、in front of は場所的関係を表す場合に使われると考えれば分かりやすいかと思います。」と書かれてあったので、確認したかったです。before, in front of は同義語なら深く考える事もないようですね。ご回答ありがとうございました。

前置詞と群前置詞の見極め方について聞かせてください。 I stood in front of the teacher's desk. という文章がありました。 この文を訳そうとしたとき私は、 I /stood/ in front /of the teacher's desk. 私は/立った/前に/先生の所有するデスク と解釈して「私は先生の机の前に立った」と訳しました。 しかし、後から「in front of～ 」で「…の前に」という群前置詞だと知りました。 例えばI didn't go out because of the rain. のような文ですと「because」を前置詞だと仮定して読み進めていくと、ofが名詞(名詞に相当する語句)ではないので、「これは群前置詞？？」と疑って調べることができます。 ですが、今回の 「in front of～」のような群前置詞の場合、「in」を前置詞と仮定して読み進めていくと、「front」は「前」という意味を持つ名詞なので「in front」という区切りで見てしまいます。 英語は単語そのものではなく、組み合わせによって意味が変化してしまうところがあると思っているので、なるべく塊（と言ったらいいのでしょうか？）で調べるようにしています。 今回はたまたま訳せましたが、「in front of」のように、塊を見極められない時が困ってしまします。 (他にもat the risk of…など) だからと言って、この世の前置詞群をすべて暗記するわけにもいきませんし・・・。 初めて読む英文で前置詞か群前置詞かわかりづらい場面に遭遇したとき、どのようにして塊を見極めていらっしゃいますか？ 皆様のご意見お待ちしております。
