ご質問の文章を次のようにパラフレーズしても、ほぼ同じ意味ですよね。 When they ask me something and I have not had any experience of it before, I would tell them that "I will study it" 彼らが私に何かを質問してきて、私がそのことについて過去に経験がない場合、私は「勉強します」と言います 上の文章でsomethingとexperience of itのitは同じものを指していますよね。 だから、itを関係代名詞whichに変えて、ひとつの文にまとめることができます。 つまり、andを取っ払って、itを関係代名詞whichに変えて、そのwhichをsomethingの後に移動します。 そうすると、ご質問の文章になります。

Any words of hers would have come as it were from across a gulf, on the colder side of which they would have had no meaning. という比喩的な文章なのですがgulfとその意味のないolder sideというところが納得できません。文脈からtheyは彼女の周囲の人だと思います。 よろしくヒントだけでも頂ければと思います。

beforeとwhenを、「そのあと」というように訳す場合がたまにありますが、これというのは英語独特の表現なのでしょうか。 どうもしっくりきません。 たとえば、beforeの場合、 Strange noises eminated from Robot before it started smoke and then stopped. 奇妙な音がロボットから出て、そのあと煙がでて、止まった。 before it started "それが止まる前に" と訳すのは間違いなのでしょうか？？ 次はwhenの場合です。 Hardly had I waited five minutes when he came. ５分待つか待たないうちに、彼がやってきた。 何年も英語を勉強していますが、このあたりがずっと曖昧な理解のままです。 詳しい方のアドバイスお待ちしております。
