今晩は。 英字新聞社ジャパンタイムズ ＞ Essay ＞Honing appreciation（By Kit Pancoast Nagamura） （http://www.japantimes.co.jp/shukan-st/english_news/essay/2009/ey20091204/ey20091204main.htm）について質問します。 宜しくお願いします。 (1) Third-generation blacksmith Nobuyuki Ikegami, Vulcan-like, manages fire with powerful forearms and fingers the size of cigars, fashioning tools known worldwide for excellence. このfingers とthe size of cigars, とは文法的にはどのようにつながるのでしょうか。 例えばfingers （ that is like ） the size of cigars, みたいな感じでしょうか？ fashioning 以下は、forearms と fingers を主語とするの分詞構文？だと思うのですが？ 一般的にこのような書き方って結構するものなのでしょうか、それともこの人の独特な書き方なのでしょうか。 (2) I returned and stood outside the workroom amongst bags of charcoal and coke. この意味が全く分かりません、workroom と bags の関係はどのような関係なのでしょうか？（ amongst の意味が不明です） (3) I stood around watching him hammer, heat, and shape one tool for about an hour. ここは一体どのように訳するのでしょうか？ him と hammer, heat, shape 、one tool の関係は文法的に分かりません。 (1)の疑問と同じかもしれませんが？ (4) I was a dullard receiving my chisel, too ignorant to know where to begin an appreciation of it. a dullard receiving my chisel の文法的な構成はどのようになっているのでしょうか、 意味は何となく分かるのですが。。。 以上宜しくお願いします。

(1) the size of ですが、こちらで例がいくつかご覧になれます。 http://eow.alc.co.jp/%22the+size+of%22/UTF-8/ bunch of flowers the size of ～サイズの花束 even for a company the size of ～規模の企業にとってさえ make balls the size of a baseball 野球ボールくらいの大きさのボールを作る in an area the size of a fingernail 指の爪ほどの大きさの範囲で ということで、こういう言い方をするものなんですね。勉強になりました。 fashioning 以下はNobuyuki Ikegami を主語とする分詞構文だと思います。 このような書き方はよく見ますので一般的だと思います。 (2) I returned and stood outside the workroom amongst bags of charcoal and coke. amongst=among ですから、「作業場の外の、炭やコークスが入った袋に囲まれたところに立った」ということではないでしょうか。 outside the workroom とamongst bags .... とは同格ではないかと思います。作業場はとても狭いところのようですから、そのすぐ外の、コークスや炭の袋が置いてあるところのすき間に立って、仕事の様子を見ていたのではないでしょうか。 (3) I stood around watching him hammer, heat, and shape one tool for about an hour. watch は知覚動詞ですので、「watch＋人＋動詞の原形」という形になっていますね。「彼が1つの道具を槌（つち）で叩き、熱し、形作っていくのを見ていた」ということです。 (4) I was a dullard receiving my chisel, too ignorant to know where to begin an appreciation of it. receiving は分詞構文ではないでしょうか。 Receiving my chisel, I was a dullard. と考えれば分かりやすいと思います。「ノミを受け取って、私はボーッとしてしまった」ということでは。 too ignorant 以下はdullard の説明でしょう。「何とお礼の言葉を述べたらいいものやら見当がつかず、ただボーッとしていた」ということかと思います。

tjhirokoさん、回答有り難う御座いました。 う～ん、成るほどという感じです。。。。 全体的にもっとカンマで区切ってよって感じですが、nativeにとっては簡単に理解出来る構文なのでしょうかね？？？ どうもこの人独特の構文（言い回し？）みたいな気もするのですが、、、、 まぁ所詮は、日本人にはなかなか理解出来ないニュアンスではあるような気がするのですが。 今後とも宜しくお願いします。
