文中のtheyについて。
(They don't say more than whom, but we're to understand they mean more than women who don't use the product.) この文章の中の、we're to understand they meanのtheyは彼らの意味はと訳すのでしょうか？ theirはつかえないのでしょうか？ 例えば、Ive never heard her sing a song.はsheがherに変わるのですよね？でこれは彼女が歌うのを聞いたことがないと訳すのですよね？文中の中で主語が違う形に代わるのはどういう場合なのでしょうか？又、なんと言う文法を勉強すればいいのでしょうか？ アドバイスいただければ助かります。

No.1です。 前後が分からなかったので、検索して記事を見つけました。 Ads for Crystal Light low-calorie powdered drink mixes say that "Women who use Crystal Light drink 20 percent more water." (They don't say more than WHOM, but we're to understand they mean more than women who don't use the product.) この場合 whom は「誰」という意味です。（その製品を用いる女性は）「誰」より20%多量に水を飲むのか。彼らは言わないが、言わんとするのはその製品を用いない女性よりも、です。当たり前のことですね。

I've never heard her sing a song. この her は目的格の her です。 hear 目的語＋原形で「（目的語）が～するのを聞く」という意味です。 「彼女を聞く」のですが，同時に「彼女が歌を歌う」のであり，日本語としては「彼女が歌うのを聞く」と訳すのが自然なのです。 この形は see, hear など感覚を表す動詞で用いられ，日本では「知覚動詞」といって，高校で勉強します。 understand の場合， I think (that) he is honest. I know (that) he is honest. と同じで， understand (that) SV で「S が V すると理解する」 の形で，they mean ～となっています。 「その商品を使っていない女性よりも，ということを彼らは意味する（言いたい）と理解する」 これを日本語で「彼らの意味するところは～」のように訳すのは自由です。 とにかく，「彼らは～を意味する」で they です。 I think (that) he is honest. を I think him (to be) honest. とすることもできます。 「彼を思う」なんだけど 「彼が正直だと思う」 日本語でどう訳そうが，英語で目的語になっていれば目的格になります。

...we're to understand (that) they mean more than... that が省略されているんですね。 もしも"they"を"their"にするなら、"their meaning"となりますが、その後に"more than"と比較が来ています。この比較の前にはSVO(またはSV)が必要になりますが"their meaning"としたら名詞だけで動詞や形容詞がないことになって比較ができません。

前後の関係がよくわかりませんが、they は初めの they と同じではないでしょうか。彼らは口に出して言わないが意味すること（言いたいこと）は.... -----they don't say more than... -----they mean more than...
