no.3です。 WORD CHOICE: invent, discover You invent something that did not exist before, such as a machine or a method: Abner Doubleday invented baseball in 1839. You discover something that existed before but was not known, such as a place, thing, or fact: Gold was discovered in California in the 19th century. 【Longman Advanced American Dictionary】 ~ a new scientific law

Watching TV, Satsuki learned that more than 40 years have passed since human beings landed on the moon. She was surprised that humana had gone into outer space so long ago. (2)(She did an Internet search so as to learn more about it), and read some articles on the moon landings. On July 20 1969, the first moon landing was achieved by U.S. astronauts Neil Aemstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The U.S. in the 60's was putting all its energies into the Apollo Program, a human moon-landing project, and the astronauts reached the moon aboard Apollo 11. Following this, five other Apollo spacecraft landed on the moon by 1972. Among the articles about human efforts to land on the moon, Satsuki found one referring to the Apollo 13 accident. Apollo 13 was launched on April 11 1970, and on the way to the moon, one of its oxygen tanks exploded. There was not enough oxygen left to do research on the moon. For fear that they would run out of oxygen, the crew decided to abandon the landing. The space ship circled around the moon and then returned safely to Earth. If the crew had not judged the situation calmly, tha result would have been a terrible accident. Satsuki was deeply moved by this story. From it she learned that even if something had happens we should stay calm and have the courage to give up something important instead of being reckless. She did an Internet search ( )( ) she could learn more about it. a.Humans achieved the first moon landing more than 60 years ago. b.Neils Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first men to land on the moon. c.The apollo 13 accident occurred on the way back to Earth. d.The crew of Apollo 13 had to change thier plans because of an accident. e.Satsuki thought we need to have the courage to be reckless sometimes.

On October 4, 2004, the private spacecraft named SpaceShipOne succeeded in its second flight. The designer of the spacecraft, Burt Rutan, spoke about his dream of space travel. "As the designer of SpaceShipOne, I was completely certain of our team's successful flight. I have wanted to see our privately-built spaceship achieve something the U.S.government has not achieved;develop technoligy to make space flight affordable and safe for ordinary people. To me this would be the fulfillment of a childhood dream. I was 14 years old when Sputnik was launched into orbit, and I believed that people (A) one day be able to visit the planets and stars. Some day, I told myself, I too (A) be able to go aboard a spacecraft and rocket into orbit, and even enjoy a vacation on the moon. However, by the mid-1990s, I'd realized that waiting for NASA wasn't (B) to work. The government was trying to reduce the cost of space development. To make my dream come true, I thought I'd have to get this started myself. I was encouraged to do this by the history of aircraft design. Five years after the Wright brothers' first flight in 1903, the airplane was still just a dangerous curiosity. Only a dozen or so people(venture) into the air. But by 1912, hundreds of pilots(fly) a number of different designs developed around the world. Some factories in France, England, and Germany were producing hundreds, and then thousands, of airplanes a year. Why? I believe it's simply because they thought, `That's (B) to be fun,' and `Maybe I can do that.'"

Water is our most important natural resource. Yet though water covers most of the Earth, only 2.5% of it is salt-free. Demand for fresh water has risen sharply in the last 50 years, and it is still going up. That’s already causing serious problems. Finding the right solutions may be one of the biggest challenges of our time. There are several reasons behind the growing crisis. The first is waste. About 70% of our fresh water is used to grow crops. It takes 1,000 tons of water to grow just one ton of wheat. Unfortunately, around 60% of that water is wasted. Better irrigation methods would help the situation. Pollution is another big problem. Many of the world’s great rivers, such as the Ganges in India, are badly polluted. Yet 350 million people rely on the Ganges. Their health is affected by the health of the river. Steps are being taken to clean up some waterways, but it is expensive and can take years. Overuse also puts pressure on water supplies. In the USA, 95% of the country’s fresh water comes from underground sources. With so much water being used to grow crops and raise livestock, water levels are dropping rapidly. Once used, those supplies are gone forever, since they are not refilled by rainwater. The key there is to lower demand. In many places around the world, people already live in crisis. More than one billion people have no access to clean water. That leads to millions of deaths every year, including thousands of children dying every day in Africa. By 2025, as many as 25 African countries may face severe water shortages. The situation could even lead to wars over water rights. The fresh water crisis is not limited to poor regions. Indeed, rich and poor countries from Asia to Europe to North America are facing shortages. It’s a growing problem that could soon affect us all.
