○ まず基本的なことの確認をしておきましょう。 ○ 「evidence」のような不可算名詞には、通常は冠詞の「a」や「the」をつけません。ただし、関係代名詞節や「of」などで導かれた修飾語句が後続する場合には「the」をつけることもあります。問題は「どのような場合につけて、どのような場合につけないのか」ということです。 ○ 簡単に言えば、「一般的」なことを表す場合には「the」をつけません。それに反して、「特定のこと」を表す場合には「the」をつけません。 ○ 下記の英文は、どちらも「私たちの内面を扱う文学」という意味を表す英語ですが、上記の基準にしたがって使い分けをしなければなりません。 (1) literature that deals with our inner life (2) the literature that deals with our inner life ○ お尋ねの英文は、具体的なことが判明していない状況での記述ではないかと推測されます。したがって、その中で用いられている「evidence that points to the existence of an underground ocean of water and ammonia」という表現においては、「the」をつけないことは自然なことだと思われます。 ○ 研究が進み具体的なことが判明した後では「the evidence that ...」という表現も可能になるだろうと思います。

Watching TV, Satsuki learned that more than 40 years have passed since human beings landed on the moon. On July 20 1969, the first moon landing was achieved by U.S. astronauts Neil Aemstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The U.S. in the 60's was putting all its energies into the Apollo Program, a human moon-landing project, and the astronauts reached the moon aboard Apollo 11. Following this, five other Apollo spacecraft landed on the moon by 1972. Among the articles about human efforts to land on the moon, Satsuki found one referring to the Apollo 13 accident. Apollo 13 was launched on April 11 1970, and on the way to the moon, one of its oxygen tanks exploded. There was not enough oxygen left to do research on the moon. For fear that they would run out of oxygen, the crew decided to abandon the landing. The space ship circled around the moon and then returned safely to Earth. If the crew had not judged the situation calmly, tha result would have been a terrible accident. Satsuki was deeply moved by this story. From it she learned that even if something had happens we should stay calm and have the courage to give up something important instead of being reckless. 英語の問題で、 Not until the discovery of Pluto's moon Charon were many of the characteristics of the planet Pluto evident. という文があったのですが、evidentはevidenceの形容詞形で明白な、明らかなという意味ですが、なぜこの位置に来れるのですか？ この位置にくるとしたらevidenceじゃなければならないのではないでしょうか？ 英語に詳しい方教えてください。

Water is our most important natural resource. Yet though water covers most of the Earth, only 2.5% of it is salt-free. Demand for fresh water has risen sharply in the last 50 years, and it is still going up. That’s already causing serious problems. Finding the right solutions may be one of the biggest challenges of our time. There are several reasons behind the growing crisis. The first is waste. About 70% of our fresh water is used to grow crops. It takes 1,000 tons of water to grow just one ton of wheat. Unfortunately, around 60% of that water is wasted. Better irrigation methods would help the situation. Pollution is another big problem. Many of the world’s great rivers, such as the Ganges in India, are badly polluted. Yet 350 million people rely on the Ganges. Their health is affected by the health of the river. Steps are being taken to clean up some waterways, but it is expensive and can take years. Overuse also puts pressure on water supplies. In the USA, 95% of the country’s fresh water comes from underground sources. With so much water being used to grow crops and raise livestock, water levels are dropping rapidly. Once used, those supplies are gone forever, since they are not refilled by rainwater. The key there is to lower demand. In many places around the world, people already live in crisis. More than one billion people have no access to clean water. That leads to millions of deaths every year, including thousands of children dying every day in Africa. By 2025, as many as 25 African countries may face severe water shortages. The situation could even lead to wars over water rights. The fresh water crisis is not limited to poor regions. Indeed, rich and poor countries from Asia to Europe to North America are facing shortages. It’s a growing problem that could soon affect us all.
