正式な国名の表記
サミットについて調べています。 各国首脳が会議場で円卓を囲んで座りますが、卓上に置かれる国名のプレートには英語でその国の正式名称が書かれるようですが、写真などを見ると、例えばフランス(正式名称はFrench Republic)は「FRANCE」、アメリカ(正式名称はUnited States of America)は「UNITED STATES」という風に長いものは略称を書いています。ここで、ロシア(正式名称Russian Federation)、ドイツ(正式名称Federal Republic of Germany)、イギリス(正式名称United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)、イタリア(正式名称Republic of Italy)の4か国について、プレートにはどのように表記されるでしょうか。国連等においても状況は似たものではないかと推測しますが、このあたりの事情について詳しい方、情報をお知りの方、教えていただきたいです。よろしくお願いします。

国の正式名称が○○○共和国となっている国には英語で表記すると フランス共和国（Ｆｒｅｎｃｈ Ｒｅｐｕｂｌｉｃ）のように○○○ Ｒｅｐｕｂｌｉｃとなるものと イタリア共和国（Ｒｅｐｕｂｌｉｃ ｏｆ Ｉｔａｌｙ）のようにＲｅｐｕｂｌｉｃ ｏｆ ○○○となるものの ２パターンあるのですが、日本語では２つとも同じ○○○共和国と言うのに英語表記では違います。 この２つの違いは何でしょうか？教えて下さい。

わが国日本における、英国の通称はイギリスです。 正式名称を日本語表記する場合は、たいてい クレートブリテン及び北アイルランド連合王国です。 この元の語は the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland です。 かたやわが国日本における、米国の通称はアメリカです。 正式名称を日本語表記する場合は、たいてい アメリカ合衆国です。 この元の語は United States of America です。 さて、どちらも元の語では United なのに、一方は「連合」、他方は「合衆」です。 この違いはどこから来たのでしょうか？ クレートブリテン及び北アイルランド合衆王国ではいけないのでしょうか？ アメリカ連合国ではいけないのでしょうか？ 英語と国際情勢に詳しい方、お願いします。

先日受験した就職試験（一般常識問題）で、 ＜＜「ＦＩＦＡ」 「ＦＢＩ」の日本語名称は？＞＞ という問題が出たんですが、わかりませんでした（ＴＴ；） 試験後に英和辞典などで調べたんですが、英語での正式名称（？）は載っているんですが、 日本語に訳した場合の名称は書いてなかったので、困っています。 どなたか教えてください！ ちなみに英和辞典には以下のように載っていました。 ＦＩＦＡ＝ (フランス語Federation Internationale de Football Association から） International Football Federation ＦＢＩ＝ Federal Bureau of Investigation そのまま訳してみたら ＦＩＦＡ＝「国際フットボール連盟」 ＦＢＩ＝「取り調べの連邦政府事務所」？？？ となるんですが・・・（笑） よろしくお願いいたします。

This is very confusing,and so it is worth spending some time getting the facts clear. The officisl name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This name is too long for everyday purposes and is usually abbreviated to the UK. The UK is made up of four countries(not regions),which are,in decreasing order of size:England,Scotland,Wales and Northern ireland. Great Britain is actually the name of the main island containing England,Scotland and Wales. The most common way,however,to refer to the whole country is Britain. This is not the official name,but most people use it because it is short and convenient. England,Scotland,Irelandand Wales all developed as separate kingdoms with their own languages and customs. As England became more powerful,it wanted to extend its control over the three Celtic kingdoms. It conquered Wales(1282) and Ireland(1652) and became politically united with Scotland(1707). But Scotland,Wales and Ireland never lost their status as separate countries. In the early 20th century, Ireland became an independent country known as the Irish Republic(or Eire,in the Irish language). Six counties in the northeastern corner,however,remained part of Britain,and are known as Northern Ireland.

文化人類学に関する冊子を作っていて、紙面の都合上イングランド・アイルランド・スコットランド・ウェールズ・マン島を一つのカテゴリーに纏めたいと思っているのですが、そのカテゴリーの名称、特に英名に悩んでいます。 Englandではイングランドしか示さず、UKやGreat Britainではアイルランドが含まれなかったり政治的に正しくないという指摘があったり、United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Irelandでは長過ぎ、そもそもいずれの名称でも正確にはマン島が含まれない…といった具合です。 日本人にとってはイギリスで通じるとは思いますが、英訳もされるので最大限配慮したいと考えています。 イギリス地方/UK Areaにしようかとも思いましたが、あまり耳慣れない言葉でしっくりきません。 地理的に近く文化的に似通った箇所が多いため、他にも一纏めにしている例があるのではと思い探しましたが、見つけられませんでした。どなたか好例をご存知の方がいたら教えて下さい。 それとも、国際的に配慮しつつこれらの地域を一纏めにしようとする行為自体がそもそも間違いでしょうか。この手の問題に詳しい方で、そのような指摘がありましたらお願いします。
