"as the next thing to learn about"の意味
"They see wine as the next thing to learn about, not as an elitist topic"のを訳すとどうなりますか？特に"the next thing"ですが、辞書をみると、次にしたいような流行物という肯定的な意味がでていました。しかし、後半の"not as an elitist topic"からすると、ワインを学ぶ事を積極的に見ていないようにも読めるのですが、どのように解釈したらよいのでしょか？

肯定的だと思いますよ。elitist のほうを否定的な意味で使ってるのでは。いずれにしても not as an elitist topic は対比的に持ってきているわけではなく、補足的に持ってきていると思います。wine = エリート主義 じゃないよ、ということ思います。

＞訳すとどうなりますか？ 彼らはワインというものを権威のある人たちの語る話題として ではなく、それに甘んじた学ぶべきものとして見ている。 ＞ワインを学ぶ事を積極的に見ていないようにも読めるのですが むしろ逆でしょう。既存の見方でない別のアプローチから価値を 見出してワインを見ているという評価では？

映画のセリフとして使われている表現で、分からないものがあります。 1,Today is kind of the biggest day of my life, and the thing is, I need you not to get him arrested. 2, But the thing is she wore the gloves all the time, so I just thought maybe she has a thing about dirt. 1は『塔の上のラプンツェル』で、宮殿の馬が泥棒のユージーンを連れていこうとする場面で、ラプンツェルが馬を説得するために言ったセリフです。 2は『アナと雪の女王』で、アナが会ったばかりの男性と結婚しようとしたことでエルサを怒らせてしまったことをクリストフに説明している場面で、この直前にクリストフが話を遮り、"You got engaged to someone you gust met!?"と言っています。 質問は、このどちらにも使われている "the thing is" がどういう意味で、どういうときに使われるのかということです。 恐らくそんなに意味のある言葉ではないと思うのですが、調べてもあまり納得できる解説がなかったので、教えていただきたいです。

高校レベルの接続詞の問題なのですが、 (1)She did not say anything as to which she was going to pay in cash or by check. (2)One bad thing about vacation is what they have to end. 上の2文の誤りを訂正する問題なのですが… (1)はおそらく as to which が誤りなのでしょうが、何に訂正すればいいのかわかりません。 (2)はどこが誤りなのかすらわかりません。 どなたかご教授いただけると幸いです。

I was jealous of anyone she so much as smiled at. という文に出会いました。訳は、「彼女がほほえみかけただけの人に対しても嫉妬をおぼえた」となるのは察しが付きますが、このso much as は、普通、肯定文で使用されるものなのでしょうか。辞書では、She did not so much as looked at me. (プログレッシブ英和)というのは見かけましたが、肯定文のはありませんでした。 例文をご存じの方、so much as を文法的に解釈できる方お願いします。
