英語やり直し組です U.S. National Security Council Spokesman Gordon Johndroe says President Bush joins the Pakistani people in their continued concern about the state of emergency and the curtailment of basic freedoms. (1)their continued concernと書かれていますがcontinuingではないのでしょうか？ 「彼らの続いている関心事」のような意味だと思うのですが何故continuedなのでしょうか？またcontinuingだとおかしいのでしょうか？ Johndroe told reporters in Texas that the White House is calling on all sides to refrain from violence and to work together to put Pakistan back on the path to democracy. (2)calling on all sidesのonはtoではないのでしょうか？ 「四方八方に呼びかけている」という意味だと思うのですがtoではないのでしょうか？onでもわかりますが、どちらでもいいのでしょうか？ (3)to put Pakistan back on the path to democracy.のon～toはto～ofだと駄目なのでしょうか？ to return(restore?) Pakistan to the path of democracy.のようだとニュアンスが変わってくるのでしょうか？ お願いします。

(1)their continued concernと書かれていますがcontinuingではないのでしょうか？ 過去分詞を使うことにより、受身の動作であることを示しています。つまり、自分から続けたいわけではなく、他の原因があるため、続けざるを得ないということ。つまり、様々な政治状況があり、それらのために仕方なく続いていると言う意味。 (2)calling on all sidesのonはtoではないのでしょうか？ call on～ で「～を訪ねる」と言う意味があり、直接実際に呼びかけるというニュアンスが生まれます。call to～だと、遠くから声をかけるという感覚になるはず。また、to を使うと、all sides がどこか遠くのほうにあるような感覚になり、すでに存在している「各方面」を意味するには不適切。 (3)to put Pakistan back on the path to democracy.のon～toはto～ofだと駄目なのでしょうか？ put AA back on BB 「AAをBBに戻して置く」と言う意味。put があるので、on しか使えないでしょう。また、path to democracy は、「民主主義へ続く道」と言う意味で、現状は民主主義が実現されていないことを意味しています。path of democracy だと、「民主主義の道」となり、すでにある民主主義社会がどう進んでいくか、または、どう進んできたか、のような意味になります。

はい、前置詞に関する質問だけ答えるようにしている関係で、（２）と（３）のみ説明させていただきます。 まず、「on all sides」と複数形が続いていることに気をつけてください。たとえば、 ●a little town on the banks of the Avon （エーヴォン河畔の小さな町） つまり、ここでの「on」を「to」にすると、「その場だけ、その（岸）地点のみ」という意味になりかねません。「on」には、「継続」という意味があって、「あらゆる側へ」という意味で書いているのですから、「on」でないと困るわけです。 さて、「on the path to democracy」の説明ですね？ ？？to the path of democracy 「of democracy」とは、すでにできあがっているdemocracyを意味します。しかし、現実には、まだないはずです。ですから、「the path to freedom （自由への道）」のように、「to」でないと意味が通じません。 「to the path」では、「決まった途」となりかねません。つまり、これから続くという意味がないので、「on the path」のようにしないと、「ある途への選択」という意味が伝わらないおそれがあります。 他の回答をも見て理解してください。

読み飛ばしておりましたが、やはり気になったので教えてください。 今回もHarry potter and the philosopher's stoneに関してです。 UK版のp.76の真ん中あたりの文です。 HarryとRonはHogwartsに向かう列車にいます。 Harryは車内販売で食べ物を買うため廊下に出て、たくさんのお菓子と共にコンパートメントに買い、席の空きスペースにどさっと置いたので、Ronがびっくりしているという場面です。 "Ron stared as Harry brought it all back into the compartment and tipped it on to an empty seat." この文で、"on to"という表現に関して質問させてください。 "空きスペースに"というだけなら、"on an empty seat"と"on"だけでいいような気がしますが、どういうときに"on to"という表現を使えばいいのでしょうか？ 教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。

いつも大変お世話になっております。 Ｓ＋Ｖ＋to 動詞, to 動詞, and to 動詞 の法則？？に関して質問させていただきます。 I believe that the three most common reasons are to prepare for a career, to have new experiences, and to increase their knowledge of themselves and of the world around them. という英文があります。この形はわかりやすいのですが、以下のように、toが最初にしかついていない形を時々見かけている気がします。 They can learn to live on their own and take care of themselves without having their family always nearby. They can learn to live on their own AND They take care of themselves ではなく、 They can learn to live on their own AND They can learn to take care of themselves なのですよね？なぜ、toが省略されうるのでしょうか？ 10年以上この疑問を放置してきたのですが、今日こそ、何か意味があるのかはっきりさせていただきたいと思い、質問させていただきました。
