こなれた日本語にするには？
He hoped that something good, for someone, would survive this night. 単語は全て基本語です。私は直訳気味でしか訳せませんでした。 「彼は、誰かにとって、今夜何か良いことが残ることを願った」 と、こんな感じでも良いのですか？

＃２です。 補足ありがとうございます。 飛行機の墜落という非常事態に関してだと、やはりsurviveは入っていた方がより、危機に対する感情がでるので、入れたほうが的確かと思います。

意味はそれでいいですが、こなれた日本語にするには、まずは原文や直訳分をきれいに忘れて、その世界観の中に身を浸らせて役者となるといいです。つまり、情景を文章ではなく絵などとして思い浮かべて、ひとつの芝居か映画を頭の中で作ってみるわけです。その映像を、今度は日本語の文章で表してみてください。 で、私は、こんな情景が自然と思い浮かびました。Keithが管制塔から遠くを見やりながら「お願い、なんとかして、少しでも」という思いを込めて心で祈っている姿です。それを文章にしてみます。He hoped so.から行きます。 「そう切に願った。何かいいことが、誰かを一人でも救ってくれる何かが、今宵をしのげますようにと」

前文からのつながりからすると、 彼はせめて今夜だけは誰かに幸運が残っていることを祈った。 訳が飛躍しすぎてますか？？

「彼は、誰かに何か良いことが起き、それで今夜が無事過ごせますよう祈った。」 survie this night 今夜を切り抜ける、このsurviveは他動詞として「を行き延びる」の意味ではないかと推理しました、「this night」=副詞としての今夜ではなく、その証拠に(大袈裟か!)、tonightではなくわざわざthis nightとしているところから。 直訳は 彼は、何か良いことは誰かに起き、そのことが今夜を生き延ばせるように望んだ。 最初は当てずっぽだったが、書いている内に半信半疑が自信・確信に 変わってきた(笑)。松坂みたいだな!

surviveに関しての訳は入れたほうがいいのではないかと思うのですが。 「今夜生き残る（非常に可能性が低い）ことが誰かのために良いこと（意義のあること）であって欲しいと彼は望んだ（願った）」 かな、と思いました。 前後の関係で「生き残る」という訳でいいのかは疑問が残ります。 特に戦争などの話であれば「生き残る」でいいのではと思うのですが。 できれば前後の話、どういう場面で出てきたのか補足していただくと訳しやすいかと。

前の文は以下の通りです。 Keith wondered if the crisis involving Air Force KC135, which had had failure, had ended yet. Chances were, it had; that the aircraft and its crew had landed safely.He hoped so. 戦争等の話ではありませんが、管制塔から見た飛行機の墜落のことを 危惧していて、しかし無事だったということを言っていると 思います。 やはり「生き残る」とそのまま入れたほうがいいですかね？
