このwould-beはどういう使い方？
Typical plots start when would-be attackers begin watching their target "18 months to four years prior to an attack" to look for security weaknesses, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21035785/site/newsweek/ の記事の１ページ目の真ん中あたりにこのような文があります。 意味的には 「テロリストたちが18ヶ月から4年間も前からセキュリティの弱点 を見つけるためにターゲットを視察しだすところから 典型的な（テロの）計画が始まる。」 という感じだと思うのですがattackersの前のwould-beというのは どういう使い方、意味を持つのでしょうか。 なんか慣用的な使い方だと思うのですが。。。 よろしくお願いいたします。

すでにご回答が出ておりますが これは仮定法からの転用語（こんな言葉あるかどうか知りませんが 今私が作りました）だと思われます。 つまり 「もし何かきっかけがあれば ・・・になるであろう人」から来ているのではないかと推測します。 で 先のご回答のような日本語訳が生まれたのでしょうね。 そういえば最近時折新聞記事等で目にしますね。 何も考えずに読んでいましたが。 今も続いているかと思いますが ＥＲ という有名なアメリカのテレビドラマがありますね。 あの中で何年か前に soon-to-be という言葉が使われました。 当時は吹き替えか英語かしかの放送しかなく 私は字幕なしの英語で見ておりましたが とても新鮮な感じがしました。 実際に ドラマの中でそれを誰かに言われたグリーン先生が もう一回その言葉をつぶやいて 「なかなかいい表現だ」とかつぶやきます。 今では 英辞郎 にも載っていますね。 当時自分の中では「まもなくそうなる」と理解しました。 先日 映画を見ていたら 結婚する新郎に向けて友達が "Your soon-to-be ex wife is waiting." と冗談を言っているシーンがあり随分この言葉が浸透したんだなぁと思いました。 ご参考までに。

あっ、ミスタイプ有り 「~~死体人」ーー「何々したい人」です。 自分で死体になりたい人は「would-be suicide /// 自殺志願者」ですね、失礼しました。別に受けを狙った訳ではないんよ、ですが、偶然、良い参考例になりましたね(爆)

would-be は、～になりたい人、～志望の人 のような意味です。 would-be attackers なら、テロリストの卵たち とか、 テロリスト志願者たち とかいう意味になると思います。

Most information from any blog site needs to be treated with the same suspiction that would normally be reserved for neighborhood gossip. ブログサイトからの情報は、普通なら近所のゴシップに対するものと同じような疑いの目で取り扱わなければならない。 上記の文について２つ質問があります。どちらか一方でも答えていただけたら幸いです。 (1)need to doの受動態は be needed to doではだめなのか？ 上記の文でneeds to be treated はis needed to treat ではダメなのでしょうか？ (2)wouldの用法について 英文の訳では意訳されてしまっているのでwouldの意味がよくわかりません。このwouldはどのような使われ方をされているのでしょうか？

This morning my work email brought a message from a woman I haven’t seen in more than five years. We worked together (different departments, same university) in early 2011. At first I thought the email was a mistake—meant for someone else with my name—because I didn’t recognize the sender’s name. But then I remembered her. She and I had lunch or dinner together a couple of times when I lived in that city, and we talked about work stuff; both of us were from someplace else and neither had many friends there. It wasn’t what I would call a friendship. Her email says that she is coming to my current city for a particular art exhibit and that she would like to see me (maybe catch the art show together), and asked whether I would be interested in meeting when she’s here. I’m not. I remember so little about her. After all this time, do I owe her a reply?
