前半はほぼ合っていると思います。 ただ後半は、過去の（昔の）人々は近代の多くの人々よりも、夜に親しみを感じていた。とするほうがいいんじゃないでしょうか。familiarはfamilyから派生してるんで、親しみを感じてると訳す方が上手く行くことが多いですよ。 後、最後はthe modern would beじゃないですかね。wouldが過去形なののでthe modernを現代ではなく、近代と訳しました。

Half of that is donated each year by average people and families and half is donated by richer people. Recently, the very rich have been challenged to give even more by the Giving Pledge A group of very wealthy people like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates started this idea.
