The commas 1) In spite of the weather they decided to walk to the park. 2) They decided , in spite of the weather, to walk to the park. ? 文章にするとき 1) では comma は必要ないでしょうか? 2) では必ず commas の enclose は必要なのですか? 教えてください。

>1) In spite of the weather they decided to walk to the park. >2) They decided , in spite of the weather, to walk to the park. >文章にするとき >1) では comma は必要ないでしょうか? >2) では必ず commas の enclose は必要なのですか? #2さんと被ってしまって大変恐縮ですが、文法的にはどちらも必要でしょう。 私の持っている文法書によると group preposition の usual position としては I can still see a brighter tomorrow in spite of my broken dreams. の様になっていますので、 2)ではencloseする必要があるでしょう。 They decided to walk to the park in spite of the weather. ならば、comma は必要ないのでしょうが、 In spite of の場合は逆説を emphasize するケースが多いのではと思いますので、 adverbial expression としての usual position として the front of the sentence となってくるかと思います。 In spite of the weather they decided to walk to the park. は、文章の長さ的にも comma がない方がスマートに見えるのかも知れません。 「思いやり」 という観点から言えば、1)の文章は comma があっても不親切ではないでしょうか。 日本語も同様ですが、comma が多い文章は読みにくく稚拙な印象になるかと思います。 文法的な事は苦手なので自信なしでごめんなさい。 ご専門の方のコメントがあればよろしいのですが。

Gです。 こう考えてください. 使われている英語では、誤解が起こらないのであれば、カンマは書いた人の「思いやり」の表し、だと. 文法はこの誤解が起こらないようにする「しつけ」、その他のことは個人の自由、ということになります. よって、１）でカンマをつけてもつけなくても誤解は起こりませんね. ２）の場合は、本文とわけるために使っただけですね. よって、weatherの後のカンマがつけない人もいるわけです. でも、つければそれだけ親切になる、と言う事です. 生きた英語だからと言う事です. 日本人でも同じですね. 生きた日本語だから、入れる人もいる仕入れない人もいる. また、古い国語学者の方々にとっては歯がゆいところでもあるわけです. なお、decidedのあとのカンマにはスペースがあるようですが、「文法」によって、いれないことになっていますね. これは、文頭の単語を大文字にする習慣と同じような物ですね. ほな、頑張っておくれやす.

私の持っているグラマーの本によると両方とも必要。 この本はアメリカの高校生の英語の(国語)のグラマー読本ですので、”コンマが入ってなければ国語の試験では×”ということです。そういう意味ではつけなければ間違い。 でも実際の運用面では入ってないこともあり(特に1)、英語がネイティブの人でも随分間違っています。 ２に関しては＃１サンのおっしゃられているように入っていないと読みにくいので１のケースより省略されることは少ないと思います。

正確な句読法は、英米人でも完全に習得していないことが多く、バラツキがあります。日本語でも句読点の使い方に個人差があるのと同じです。要は分かれば良いということでしょう。実際に目にする例が習ったことと違ってくるのは、よくあることです。 本来は1)の場合もあった方が良いでしょう。しかし、2)の場合の方が現実的な必要性は高いと言えます。もしcommaがなければ、一瞬考えてしまうかもしれません。はっきりいって不親切な書き方です。 They decided in spite of the weather to walk to the park. では見にくく感じませんか？ "decided to walk"は意味の上では一つながりです。"decided"と"to walk"の間に他の言葉が入ると、何を"decide"したのかが見えにくくなりますね？なので、これは挿入したものであるということを示す為にcommasによるencloseが必要になるのです。1)の場合は、特に意味上のかたまりが寸断されたわけではないので、（私ならつけますが）commaの必要性は相対的に小さいのです。 それとも、この程度のことは既に分かった上でのご質問でしょうか？知りたいことはもっと別にあるのでしょうか？
