若干ニュアンスが違うのですが、 １．この物語の引喩を理解するのに必要な場面（シーン)と情報のほとんどは、本文あるいは注釈の中で読者に充分かつ明瞭に提示されていると思われます。 ２．so ～ as toなので インディアンの因習にはあまりにも難解なことが多く、またインディアンの名前には混同することがあまりにも多いので、有効な説明を多少提示しておく。 ３．はよく分りません。

他の回答者と重複する部分はご容赦を。 #1 most of the information necessary を「たくさんの情報が必要ですが」と訳してしまうのは不正確です。 #2 as to は 2 つの so much を受けているので、2 文に分けるのであればそれなりの配慮が必要です。 #3 Few men exhibit を「ほとんどの人は ... 無いことを示している」と訳してしまうのは不正確です。 if we may so express it の部分を挿入句と考えて無視すると (すなわち greater ... or ... greater ... than ... に着目すると) 展望が開けるでしょう。

質問に答えていただき有難うございました。３番目の訳は説明していただいてよく分かりました。英語の構文が理解できそうな気がしてきています。２番目の訳はＦｏｒｕｍ８さんが "so～as to" で「～なので」と訳していまして私もこの訳でしっかりと理解できた気がします。また分からないことがありましたら宜しくお願いします。

Indian footwear looked more like stockings than shoes. These coverings for the feet came much higher on the leg than ordinary shoes. They were made of tanned skins and sewed with the sinews of animals. Early settlers found these Indian shoes extremely comfortable and well suited for walking through the woods. They often wore them and took over their Indian name, moccasin. The word seems actually to have meant "box" or "case." It is still in everyday use, but the shoes to which the name is now given do not look at all like the shoes the Indians wore. When white people borrowed a word from the Indians they often made more use of it than the Indians had ever done. They applied moccasin to a poisonous snake, the short, stout form and color of which may have suggested the Indian shoe. Most of the early pioneers knew very little about snakes and so gave the name moccasin to many snakes, some of which do not much resemble the Indian shoes and are not at all poisonous.

カナダの友人からのメールなんですがindian reservation とはどういう意味なんでしょうか？直訳通り、インディアン特別行政区でいいんでしょうか？ It is nice to hear that you share my homeland info with others:) But the province is called Saskatchewan, it is not a city....Pelican Narrows is an indian reservation where I lived for so many years before foster homes, the indian reservation school in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; and in the future, before attending university in Regina, Saskatchewan. :)
