英文

こんにちは It is a common error to imagine that a barking dog is threatening you. It may be making a loud noise which appears to be aimed directly at you, but this is misleading. という文で２つ目の文のitは何なのかさっぱりわかりません。ちなみにこれより上は何もありません。お願いします。

２行目の代名詞itは、その名の通り名詞の代わりに置かれている語です。余程変な文章で無い限り、文章と言うのは意味の繋がりがありますから、それまで述べられてきた文章の中の名詞(名詞節や句も含む)の事を指しています。 （例外もありますが、少なくともこの文はそうです。） １行目では、 a common error(良くある間違え) a barking dog(吼えている犬) の２つが名詞ですが、 be making a loud noise(大きな音を出している)と言う文の主語となるのに相応しいのは、犬しかありません。 （意味も通ります。） と言う事で、皆様が仰られているようにitに入るのは a barking dogだと思います。

そうですね。ただ最初は強調構文も疑ってみたのです（よく考えたらmaking a loud noiseを強調しても何の意味もないのですが…）ところで話はそれるのですが強調構文でmayが入ることはあるのでしょうか？

＃１ですが、1行目は「吠えてる犬があなたを脅していると思うのはよくある間違いだ。」と書いているのでは？でないと2行目の文意と会わないと思うんですが。。。

いちいち"It"がどういう意味なのか、とか日本語で考え無い事です。日本の学校英語教育の本当に悪い弊害ですね。 こういう表現は非情に英語的で、英語では別にごく普通の表現です。 しいていうなら一行目は「ワンワンうるさくほえる犬はあんたを脅している」、という意味を、２行目は単にその吼えてる犬です。 でも、そういう考え方では絶対に英語は身に付きませんよ。

なるほど。ただ日本語で「それ」とか言われたときにそれの意味がわかっていないのは困るような気がするのですが…。英語の場合はＯＫなのでしょうか？

barking dogだと思いますよ。 ワンちゃんはこっちを向いてほしくて大きな声をたてるんだけど、それは勘違いだ、ってことですよね。
