>> 問題はbusyとcontentedがどうやったらつながるように感じられるか >> ということなのですが。筆者は何をいいたいのかよくわかりません。 これは、アメリカ人が日本の女性について書いた文章だと思います（一応そう思えます）。その場合、アメリカの文化では、「忙しいこと」「多忙なこと」は、否定的な意味を持っておらず、むしろ肯定的な意味だということが鍵なのではないでしょうか。アメリカはいまでも、プロテスタンティズムの国で、「勤労」に高い価値を置く文化を持っています（最近は、そういう伝統文化が変質しているようですが）。 「仕事に多忙で充実した日を送っている」というのは、別に矛盾でも不審でもありません。busy and contented も、「多忙で、しかも満たされた」という意味で、別に、busy but contended にしなければならない必要がありません。but にしたくなるのは、日本の文化的発想ではないでしょうか。日本には、プロテスタンティズムに似た、勤労の思想文化がありましたが、同時に、「禊ぎを行えばすべて解決」とか、「一切水に流して」というような、非常に「原始的」ともいえる、人生や世界の把握文化がありました。プロテスタンティズムは、勤労禁欲の強迫的思想文化ですが、日本の文化には、反禁欲的・物見遊山的・自然賛歌的伝統もありました。近松門左衛門の「義理と人情」の拮抗というのも、日本文化のこういう二元性に根拠があるのでしょう。（キリスト教文化は高度に倫理的で、論理的で、或る意味融通のきかない強固な規範性を持っています。しかし、日本の文化には、底に自然崇拝的というか、融通無碍な面があって、ある場合は、非常に柔軟になれるということです。それは宗教を見れば分かるでしょう。日本の文化は宗教について極めて寛容というか、いい加減です。「宗教」というのは普通、文化エートスで、社会の倫理規範や成員の行動規範を決めるのですが、仏教も神道も、そういう面が日本ではありません。仏教でも、タイやスリランカなどの仏教は、人々の生活や行動の規範になっているのですが、日本の仏教は、そういうものとはかなり異質です）。 つまり、多忙なことと、満たされていること・満足していることが、しっくりこないのは、日本の文化のなかから考えているからだということです。アメリカ文化なら、多忙なことは、business であって、まさに彼らは、ビジネスが人生だという考えを持っているともいえます。また、アメリカ人の「ビジネス」は、「自分のビジネス」で、他人のものは関係がないのです。ところが、日本の文化では、ビジネスは、個人のものではなく、グループや共同体のものになっています。有名な、It is not my business. というのは、アメリカの文化では当然なことで、ところが日本では、会社などの仕事で、自分に責任のないことでも、会社のこととなると、その責任を別人が負うというのが当然のことのようになっているので、ビジネスが、或る場合、否定的に捉えられているのではないかということです。 日本の女性が「多忙である」のは、その女性個人のビジネスで多忙なので、それは、アメリカ的な価値観では、たいへん、満足できる状態なのだということなのではないでしょうか。 busy, contented housewives というのは、単に、二つの形容詞を名詞にかけた時、busy contented house...とは言わないので、あいだにカンマが入っているだけのことだと思います。
