過去完了について

これは過去の経験を表しています。これまでの例文に較べても過去完了が使われる理由ははっきりしています。 since before the accident は「その事故の以前から」。つまり夫が事故にあって意識不明から復活してリハビリをしていても体が不自由で、お互い立ち上がって抱きしめ合うことができなかった。 この理由は本文にはっきり書いていないのですが、夫は 海軍・特殊部隊 (Navy SEAL) なのと、自動車事故の後運び込まれた病院が、妻が住んでいるところから離れていることからして、事故のだいぶ前から一緒にいなかったと言うことでしょう。だから、過去からお互いに抱き合うことが無く、それがリハビリ中の夫を起き上がらせた時にキスをし始めたときまで続いていたと言うこと。

全体として過去で書かれている過去の場面があって、 since ～ ～以来、その時まで という期間の継続だからです。 当然、before the accident というより古い過去があるわけですが それだけでなく、より新しい過去までの継続 で過去完了です。 いつも申し上げるように過去完了は 大過去というより、 過去までの（より古い過去からの） 完了、経験、継続で使います。

I have a wife and child who have to eat and have to have a place to live and the only thing worse than work is seeing them go hungry or evicted from our home (my wife doesn’t workbecause we both want her to stay at home with our daughter).
