次の文について質問です
Thus, unless that evidence is of overriding consequence, it should carry less weight than if it had been included only in hostile testimony. ここのof overridingのofの使い方はどういう使い方ですか？なくてもいいような気がするのですが。また比較でless weightなのにthanの後はif節が続いていますが、比較する場合は比較対象は相当のものがくると思っていたのですがそうでもないんでしょうか？

be of はなかなかしっくり来ない表現なのですがそれなりに見かけます。 http://www.ravco.jp/cat/view.php?cat_id=5019 Webで調べれば結構例は引っかかってくるのですが、上の説明もof + 抽象名詞で、of overriding consequenceまで説明できていないのですが使い方としては、ofに続く名詞を形容詞化してbe動詞の補語にすると言う物で、なれて違和感を消すしか無いかなと思います。 that evidence is of overriding consequence その証拠は結論を覆すものである of が無いと、その証拠は結論を覆している、と動作的なものになり、多少ニュアンスが変わります。 if thanは下記に例がいくつかあります。これも例文を見て、慣れるしか無いかなと思います。 http://ejje.weblio.jp/sentence/content/%22than--if%22

お返事ありがとうございます。そうなんですね...覆すもの、というと名詞にきこえるのですが形容詞...なんですよね？ そうです。形容詞です。that evidence に対して補語としてイコールの関係になり、SVCです。

山口実況中継を勉強しています。比較のところで、 A philosopher says that man thinks of nothing less than of death. これで、自分はnothingをnoと考えて、no less than で～と同じくらい多いみたいな感じで捉え、「人間は死を考えることが多いと哲学者は言っている」と訳したのですが、答えは逆でした。否定＋比較級＋than～の比較級のところを最上級で考えてみると 意味がとりやすいとのことでしたが、 Nothing less than an attack was expected. こちらの答えは、「まさに攻撃が予測された」となっていたのですが、何故こちらは上と同じような文構造なのに、何故、no less than というふうにとらえるのでしょうか？ あと、上の例文と対照させるために、Nothing was less expected than an attack.という文章があり、こちらは、「攻撃ほど予期されないものはなかった」となっています。
