普通の see が進行形にならないのは、感覚的に目に入る、という意味である以上、 いっときだけ、ということがないからです。 この文の場合、「会う、見物する」では日本語的にはおかしいですが、 ただ視覚があることから目に入る、というのでなく、 自らの意思を持って見る、ということなので進行形が可能です。 あるいは辞書上の意味でいくと、時代や場所を主語にして 「～を経験する」という意味がありますので、それに当てはめてもいいと思います。
