STP released all six of their albums from 1992 to 2010 on Atlantic Records. The band were involved in a lawsuit with Atlantic in 2008 when the label sued former frontman Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz for attempting to get out of their contract so STP could self-release their new music. The DeLeo brothers had been let out of their contract for Army of Anyone. STP and Atlantic worked out their issues and STP's 2010 self-titled comeback album was released on Atlantic.

They now move into their ‘Chester Hagarton’ era so to speak. But on the other hand, I think it's fantastic that the DeLeo brothers and Eric Kretz will continue to perform and make music together. When they fired Weiland in February, my greatest fear was that the ‘firing’ was just a parting shot at Weiland and that it was really just a split, and that the DeLeos and Kretz would pack it in and stick to producing. If that had happened and Scott Weiland's Purple at the Core touring was the only thing keeping the STP legacy alive, that would have been very troubling.

An official statement may or may not be released later today by Weiland's camp. I am still trying to find out about what the actual state of STP is. We won't really know until they collectively release a statement. STP last performed two and a half months ago in Sacramento, California and are “on a break” according to Scott Weiland. The band have been unwilling to commit to recording a new album. Guitarist Corey Hickok and keyboardist Britt Willits initially remained from Soi-Distant, and the lineup was rounded out by ¾ of the STP lineup we have come to know: Scott Weiland, Robert DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz. There was also a drummer named David Allin, a high school friend of Scott's, who played drums before Kretz. The details surrounding his time in the band are vague. Scott and Robert had seen Kretz performing with another band, and were impressed and immediately asked him to join their band. Kretz was from San Jose, California and attended Willow Glen High School. DeLeo eventually decided that they didn't need a keyboardist, and they became a four piece. The band were based in Hollywood but played in Los Angeles and Orange County. Swing had more of a funk and hard edged alternative rock sound than Soi-Distant, one of their early songs was called “Drop the Funk.” Dean, Robert's older brother, moved to San Diego in the mid 80's and became a successful businessman. He had given up the guitar, but helped out the early version of STP get some gigs down in San Diego.

Most people are going to choose to see STP with Bennington over Weiland. STP still have 3/4 of the original members, the band name, and they also have Chester Bennington who will bring in a whole new generation of STP fans with Linkin Park's massive following. If the radio play of “Out of Time” today on KROQ in LA (they played the song once per hour) is any indication, the Chester Bennington era could bring STP back to commercial prominence. And if STP follow the Van Halen model, Scott Weiland will be back again down the line, but unfortunately Eric Kretz will be fired and replaced by one of the DeLeo brothers’ children. I think it's best for everybody to just sit back and enjoy the soap opera.

This isn't the first time Robert DeLeo has performed with Aerosmith members. Robert and Dean DeLeo performed with Steven Tyler on American Idol in May 2011. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry also joined Stone Temple Pilots onstage at the band's iconic performance at Madison Square Garden in November 1996, a show that is widely regarded as one of STP's best.
