何故isではいけないのでしょう？

＞なぜ、is ではなく areを使うのですか？ our sales わが社の売り上げ と複数形を受けているからです。 ＞また、なぜquarter の前にin などがつかないのでしょうか？ this quarter 直近の四半期 で意味が明確なので前置詞など必要ありません。 もちろんour sales in this quarter としても何ら差し支えありませんよ。 ちなみにthe last (quarter)とは前四半期のことです。

下記の英文についてお教えください。 It is not for women to teach us our business. We agree with St.Paul on this matter: ‘Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience...’ （１）最初の It is not for women to teach us our business ですが、 「我々に仕事のことを教えることは女性のためではない」 「それは女性が我々に仕事のことを教えることではない」 上記2つの場合を考えましたが、今ひとつすんなり理解できません。後続のパウロの引用文ともどうつながっているのやら。。。特に後者は「それは」と訳しましたが前の文にそれに該当するものがありません。 （2）引用符の中の英文の最後にあります but they are commanded to be under obedience ですが、この but は逆接ではなく何か特殊な用法なのでしょうか。 「女性は教会では黙っていなければならない。彼女らは語ることが許されていない。しかし、律法が命じているように、服従すべきである」 前後の文が意味上、逆になっていないので逆接で訳すと何となく奇妙に感じます。 当方英語に詳しくないため、お手数かけますが、 ご教授いただけましたら幸いです。何卒宜しくお願いいたします。

次の文で、The temperature here is higher than that in Tokyo. この文で、ここの that は、the one では間違いというのを見たのですが、どうしてthe oneでは間違いなのでしょうか？

John is more intelligent than any other student in our shool. という文を、ほぼ同じ意味で表したものが No ( )( ) is ( ) intelligent ( ) John in our shool. のとき、答えは No other student is as intelligent as John in our shool. なのだそうです。 私は、No other student is more intelligent than John in our school. でも良いのではないかと思うのですが、この答えだとどこが誤りなのでしょうか？自分でも調べてみましたが、よくわかりません。 なんだか基本的なことで申し訳ないのですが、よろしくお願いします。

こんにちは。 There is (are) を使うのは、 対象が特定のものでない場合と習ったのですが 以下の文は特定のものにならないのでしょうか。 There is a poto of Momo's friend in the newpaper. There are Momo's friends in the park. どちらも、"Momoの友達"と特定されている感じが… それとも、この文自体が間違ってますか？(笑)
