職業従事者である照会先？ＴＯＥＩＣの問題です

TOEICの問題の中で以下のような問題がでたんですが、この中で
Interested individuals are encouraged to send an e-mail with their resume and the names of three professional references
という文面の中の、職業従事者である照会先３件の名前を添えて　とあったんですが、これはどういう状態なんですか？上司ですか？前の会社の人？どういうことなのかさっぱりわかりません

Hours will be 8:30A.M. To 3:00P.M., three days a week. The specific hours cannot be changed, but there is some flexibility regarding the days of the week. The candidate must be able to start on February 1. The salary offer will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and education. 分かりやすく言うと
「履歴書と、こちらから照会したい場合に備え、仕事上のつきあいのある人の中で、あなたという人物について答えられる人を３名書いてください」
ということです。
　ですから、かつての会社、今の会社どちらでも構わないでしょう。ただし、それなりの役職についている人を普通は期待していますから、今の会社・過去の会社いずれの場合でも上司であることが普通です。
