混乱してしまいました

どうか助けて下さい He was busily washing his car as we prepare dinner last night. なんでprepare が現在形でいいんでしょうか? He was busily washing his car as we prepared dinner last night. は間違いでしょうか? We prepared dinner as he was busy washing his car last night. こちらは理解できるのですが・・・

こういう場合に唯一考えられるのはshouldの省略(=接続法現在)ですが、それはdemandとかrequireの目的語にあたる名詞節に生じます。この文では考えにくいので、preparedの間違いと思います。
