関係代名詞を使うだけの文法問題でしたら貴方の2番目の文章 I hear he is going to marry the girl who happens to be ------ でも間違いではないと思いますが、設問の二つの文章の意味を連続的に解釈しますと、『結婚する女性がたまたま私の妻だったのです。』と言わんとしてしていると思います。 文法上もそう解釈できるのも、最初が 『a girl』で 次の文章では『a girl』でなく『The girl』となっているためです。 何か日本独特の受験英語の引掛け問題のようですね。こんな問題で受験生に英語を学ばせていることが日本の英語教育を不幸にしているような気がします。

教えて下さい。 疑問文： Is there anything more ridiculous than for a man of 80 to marry a girl of 18? （出典：江川泰一郎著 英文法解説） 疑問はFORの意味（役割）なのですが、to marryの意味上の主語としての役割と 思うのですが、ここではFORが無くとも意味は通ると思いますが、FORがないと 文は成立しないのでしょうか？とすれば、その理由は？ また、疑問文は~ ridiculous than that a man of 80 ~と書き換えが可能と思います。 その場合、thatを取って、~ ridiculous that a man of 80 ~にできるように 思うのですが。 宜しく、

こういう問題に出会いました。 He is the only one of my friends that (is , are) talented. 訳) 私の友人で才能があるのは彼だけだ。 この括弧の中のisとareの2つから適切なものを選ぶ問題なのですが… 私はareを選択したのですが答えはisでした。 なぜisと言えるのかがわかりません。 私は関係代名詞『that』の先行詞が『my friends』だと思ったので『are』を選択したのですが、 解答が『is』であるということは、正しくは先行詞は『the only one of my friends』となるということでよろしいのですよね？ でも『my firiends』を先行詞にして、『才能がある友達たち（my friends that are) talented）』の『たった1人（the only one of）』としても問題ないと思います。 でもそれを間違いとし、解答が『is』でなくてはならない理由はなんなのでしょうか？ どうぞよろしくお願い致します。

回答ありがとうございました！I hear が一番最初の方が口当たりいいような気がしましたし、自然かな、と思っていたら、The girlが最初に来る解答でしたので、悩んでしまったのです。こんな回りくどい言葉遣いするの？って。受験英語、ですね。
