what is it all but Metaphorsと言う文の文型（構造）の解説をお願いします！ Examine Language; what, if you except some few primitive elements (of natural sound), what is it all but Metaphors, recognized as such, or no longer recognized? トーマス・カーライルという人の文章です。 「言語のことを考えて欲しい。（ごく自然な音という）いくつかの原初的な要素を除けば、あとはすべて……いまもそうはっきり認知できるかどうかはともかく……隠喩ではないだろうか？」と言う訳が付いているのですが、what is it all but Metaphorsの部分が、文法的にどういう構造になっていて、どうして「あとはすべて、隠喩ではないだろうか」という訳になるのか分からないので、その部分の解説をお願いします。

What is X but ...? で 「X は...以外の何だろうか，何でもない」という修辞疑問です。 すなわち，「X は...に他ならない」というのと同じです。 今回はこの主語 X が it ＝ language となっていて， それに同格的に all がついています。 language という一つ（といっても不可算的）のものですが， 「いったい，そのもの全体」という感じで用いることが可能です。

what is it about Metahors.....?と同じと思います。 したがいまして、「隠喩については何なのか、そのように認識されることなのかあるいはもはや認識されないということなのか。」といった訳になります。 辞書に当たりましたところ、all butは nearly, almost, just aboutなどとなっていました。 しかし文字通り all but xxxで「すべてではあるが、ｘｘｘｘではない」anything butと同類の訳をする必要があるときもあるので、注意が必要です。

下記の会話はNHKで放送された文法講座のスキット内会話です。 A： Would you mind if I asked you something? ちょっと聞いてもいいかな？ B： No. Go ahead. いいわよ。どうぞ。 A： What is it about this cat and shrines? この猫と神社の関係はなに？ B： I really wouldn’t know. But ｔhis isn’t a shrine. 本当にわからないの。でもこれは神社ではないのよ。 A： Really? "And we all abide by the law under the regulations, but we cannot project what is next before it takes place." 前半部分は必要ないかもしれませんが、一応載せておきました。 (1)but we cannot project what is next before it takes placeがよくわかりません。 what is nextつまりnext thingということでしょうか？ 「私たちはそれが行われる前に次のことを計画できない」 しかしwhat is nextが「次のこと」になる自信がありません。。。 (2)we all abide…と言われていますがall of usと同じでしょうか？ 普通に見た感じ意味はわかったのですが、all of us より簡単？というか軽い言い方に見えました。何か違いはあるのでしょうか？ お願いします。

お世話様です。ある参考書に載っていた文の構造がわかりません。 What does the speaker say is one of the characteristics of the menu? ここで疑問なのが、What does the speaker say の部分です。 ここがWhat the speaker says の形なら何度も見たことありますが、 What does the speaker say が文頭に来て、is …と続く文章は見たことがありません。 しかも最後に「？」がついているので、疑問文扱いです。こんな形の疑問文てあるんですか？ 解説をお願いします。
